Quotes

When we read a book that speaks to us, it stays with us.  There are many books that when I read them, I mark them up.  I annotate them until the page becomes a mix of mine and the author's words. These words will resonate for some reason or another.  Sometimes it is because we agree with the thinking; sometimes it is because on that day and time it fit with our state of mind; sometimes it supports a belief we have.  The reason the words resonate is personal.

Your blog this week is to pull out a quote from a piece of school appropriate literature and explain why it resonates.  Now, don't pick something that is so personal that it makes you uncomfortable to share.  Type the quote, gives us some context, and explain why it matters to you!!!!

For example: This is from The Things They Carried by Time O'Brien.
"And in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war.  It's about sunlight.  It's about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do.  It's about love and memory.  It's about sorrow.  It's about sisters who never write back and people who never listen" (85).

The Things They Carried is a book about the Vietnam War.  I love this quote from the book.  It reminds us that war is often not what we think it is.  It reminds us that we are human.  When we hear of war on television or in video games, it is about the fighting.  O'Brien reminds us that at the heart of war is a human.  It is about making a statement and no one caring what is said.

The quote that I chose was, "Success is dependent on effort."- Sophocles. I admire this quote because I agree that the only way to be successful is through hard work. The first time that I have heard of this quote was a few years ago when a teacher asked us to find a quote, one that we have never heard of, and write about it. I found the quote and I have never forgot it. I have lived to the words since. The quote applies to my everyday life. With school, it is hard to succeed on a test if I were not to study and spend time on it. In rugby, everyday before conditioning started in the summer and fall, I ran a mile everyday and I have noticed better results. To me, I believe that , without this quote, I would be a different person.

1984 by Georg Orwell
"Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past" (37).

This quote is the slogan of the party that controls the unpleasant society in 1984. Since the party has control, they can decide what the citizens should think about the past. They make it seem as if the people were worse off before the government in the story took control. Because the citizens don't want to repeat the past, they let the government control their future. It sounds dark (and it is meant to be), but I take the message on a personal level. I believe that I shouldn't let others tell me what is good for me. By doing this, I can control my past, present, and future.

"Never regret anything because at one point that was exactly what you wanted" Author is unknown. This is my favorite quote because anytime I am sad because of a decision or just upset in general I think about this quote, because it is true. You should not regret something that you wanted so badly in the first place. My grandpa always tells me this also, and it makes me smile when he does because I know that he cares.

"You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers."

This quote comes from the very last page of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars. I've reread this page well over a hundred times and it still gives me goosebumps. This quote sounds like the person is trying to convey a message that persuades you to be tough, to dictate who hurts you in life, and having the ability to not let them hurt you anymore. But he ends with saying, 'I like my choices', meaning he liked being hurt by the girl he is writing about (he's in love with her if you can't tell). He's not at all regretting being hurt by the love of his life. He is saying the pain is well worth the love he shared. This can be applied to any relationship, not just lovers. We often reserve ourselves from others because we fear getting hurt. We fear getting left behind and left alone. And nothing is more painful than being lonely. This quote tells us to not hold back on people, to take the ball and run with it because chances are, we will get hurt. But hopefully we don't regret our choices because it was worth it.

A quote that means a lot to me is one by Mitch Albom in the book Tuesdays With Morrie, "the truth is, once you learn how to die, you learn how to live".
This quote means a lot to me because when you realize your fate, you see life differently. For example, If I knew I was going to die of cancer, I would become more charitable and try to prevent it. If it were to be unpreventable, I would chose to live my life more positively. show more simple acts of kindness and again, be more charitable. I love this quote and think it applies to everyone, good or bad. Once you learn your fate, you can live your life a little more positive.

"What screws us up the most in life is the picture in our head of how it is supposed to be." This quote stood out to me because it is so true. Everyone has this image in their head of a perfect life and how they want everything to be. But in reality life is so hard and it brings us down. We all set such high expectations for ourselves and when we fail to meet them it seems like everything is horrible. Once you realize that you make your own happiness in life, it makes it so much easier to be happy and make the life you want.

"Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment." I picked this quote because I think this is everyones problem. To many people spend time thinking about what went wrong in the past and dwell on it and let it bring them down. Other people are so focussed on the future that they forget what they are doing in their lives right now. To make the most out of your life, you have to live in the moment. You cant spend time in the fast and you cant plan to much for the future, because you dont know what it will hold.

“Books are the ultimate Dumpees: put them down and they’ll wait for you forever; pay attention to them and they always love you back.”

My quote is from the book An Abundance of Katherine's by John Green. This book is about a boy named Colin and a journey of self-discovery he embarks on after being dumped by no less than 19 girls named Katherine. This quote resonates with me because I am such an avid reader. I started reading from a very young age and books have always been my escape. No TV show or movie has ever made me cry or smile like a good book has.

This quote is from the book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.
“He pushes my pitiful linoleum block aside and gently sets down an enormous book. “Picasso.” He whispers like a priest. “Picasso. Who saw the truth. Who painted the truth, molded it, ripped from the earth with two angry hands.” He pauses. “But I’m getting carried away.” I nod. “See Picasso,” he commands. “I can’t do everything for you. You must walk alone to find your soul” (Speak, Pg. 118).
Speak is about a girl who called the cops on her classmates who were having a party and now everyone hates her. Eventually she will speak up and reveal what really occurred at the party and everything changes.
I find the quote above very interesting. It is saying that you can’t rely on others in your life to make you happy. You, yourself, have to make it happen. It has to come within you in order to find that drive to want to succeed. One must be alone for a while to reflect on their life and make a change for the better.

The quote i chose is from the book The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. He says, "The marks humans leave are too often scars.". I believe this to be extremely factual. We as humans are much too often cruel and unkind. You never know what kind of mark you can leave on someone. This is the same for kind words as well. Saying one nice thing to someone can make their whole outlook on their day turn around. This is why it pays to always treat people with kindness.

The quote I picked is from the book Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. "The things you own end up owning you." I think this quote is very true because people have become obsessed with material things. Like people's smart phones when they loose their phone people go crazy and don't know what to do with them selfs. Or sneaker heads kids who all they care about is their shoes spending hundreds of dollers on something that is ment to protect your foot. There is no true happiness in material objects.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...” -Dr. Suess. This quote in my point of view is 100 percent correct. You are the person that controls your own destiny. Never let anyone else make your choices. Everyone needs to find it within themselves to make their life the best it can be.

My quote comes from the name of the book, "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young" written by Lt. Gen Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway. It's the story of Ia Drang, one of the most savage and important battles during the Vietnam conflict. The title itself stands out to me because this tells how every soldier would never be the same after surviving this fight. The Vietnam conflict was full of savage fighting with unconventional due to our enemy, terrain, and weapons available. It affects me cause it shows a glimpse of war how mind altering it is. I have read many other war stories and when any of them return after, they will never be the same. This shows me that war is not a good thing, to encourage others to find peace with each other as i get older. It gives me a reason to support unity among us, so none of our soldiers go through what they did.

The quote I choose was “Stop worrying about what you have to loose and start focusing on what you have to gain.” I was just withdrawn from my old school. Instead of being depressed and not caring about my school work I have to take advantage of this new opportunity and finish the year off strong. I lost a lot in the past couple months but also have a lot to prove. It doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down but how you get back up and recover defines a person. I will learn from this tragedy and become a better man.

The human race is a race of cowards; and I am not only marching in that procession but carrying a banner.
~Mark Twain, "Reflections on Being the Delight of God."

This quote by Mark Twain is a powerful statement whose purpose is to criticize himself but also make himself an example for others to follow. Twain starts by saying that all humans are cowards, and I feel like that means that we are all afraid of what others think of us and we are all afraid of stepping out and being different. He then goes on to say that he is the greatest coward there is, which is a feeling that anyone can relate to. Whenever I'm going through a tough situation, I have the tendency to feel like im at the bottom of the food chain, but this quote is a reminder that everyone has gone through this before(or will in the are all future) and that we as humans are all battling our fears together.

The quote I picked is from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Ann Brashares once said "Maybe the truth is, there's a little bit of loser in all of us. Being happy isn't having everything in your life be perfect. Maybe it's about stringing together all the little things". For example, earlier this morning I did not want to go to work. I got to work and it was going ok, but then a little girl came in. She thought the bracelet on the counter was so awesome and wanted it. She asked if it was for sale and I told her I made it and she could buy it if she would like. Her mother did not want to buy it and the little girl got sad. I finished checking them out and the little girl asked if I could show her how to make that kind of bracelet. I asked her if the bracelet that was already made would fit her. She tried it on and with a big smile said yes it fits. I looked at her and said, well then it's yours, you can keep it. She got the biggest smile on her face and was so happy! Her mom was thrilled and continued to tell me how nice I was and how sweet that was of me. I showed the little girl how to make it, and She caught on very quickly. She finished it herself, and it looked good. The little girl walked out of here with two new bracelets. One she made and one I made for her. Seeing the excitement and joy on that little girls face light up my day, and it made me realize how much I enjoy working in this toy store so I can help kids, and make them smile. If I can get at least one person to smile or laugh a day, than my job is complete and I can go to bed with a smile on my face knowing that I made someone happy. Caring and helping people in need is one of the things I enjoy to do and something that makes me happy. It's the little things in life that count.

My quote I pulled from Edgar Allan Poe's "Murders in The Rue Morgue" , " 'The riddle, so far, was now unriddled. The assassin had escaped through the window which looked upon the bed. Dropping of its own accord upon his exit (or perhaps purposely closed), it had become fastened by the spring; and it was the retention of this spring which had been mistaken by the police for that of the nail, --farther inquiry being thus considered unnecessary..." This quote is Dupin explaining aspects of a unsolved murder. Edgar Allan Poe has always been a great inspiration in my own writing and I truly love his writing style. I also enjoy the dry humor and shear intelligence characters like Dupin have. However, this quote truly inspires me because it shows that no matter how difficult something is to understand there is always an answer. We might not see it right away, someone may have to show us the answer but it is there.

In the book "This Is My Story" by Eleanor Roosevelt, I found a quote that caught my attention. This quote was "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent". This quote stood out to me because there will always be those people in life who try to bring you down and force you to give up, but that's only if you let them get to you. This quote supports one standing up for them self and I feel that is very important in life.

"There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours you haven't started wondering about yet."
This quote is from the book "James and the Giant Peach" by Roald Dahl. I really like this quote because I believe it is true. We may think we know everything in life and done all that we can but in reality there is still so many things we have yet to discover, things that we don't even know about and that haven't even crossed our minds. No matter what we may think, there is still and always will be so much more for us to learn and uncover in the world.

“The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive.” This is a quote by John Green and I like that quote because it's saying that it's up to you if you suffer or not, and you can just learn to forgive and forget the bad things in life, you will be happier.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us." This quote is by Marianne Williamson and I like it so much because it is telling us to take chances and try and get out their and do what we want. We are scared of what the outcome will be even when its very beneficial.

My quote is from the book Shooting Stars by Buzz Bissinger and LeBron James, “Don't be afraid of failure. This is the way to succeed.” This quote resonates with me because it is saying that failure is not a negative thing. Failure can be the gateway to success. Not being scared of failure is the first step in succeeding.

In Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls i chose the quote, "Everyone has something good about them. You have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that." We are quick to judge people we know so little about. People do not give others a chance, when they hear something unsettling about them. To me this quote says a lot because all the bad we see in a person shouldn't define them. There is always something good in each person, we just need to peel back the layers and find it. Accept everyone, because there is always more than meets the eye.

The quote that resonates with me is from the book "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. This quote says, "Maybe death is the great equalizer, the one big thing that can finally make strangers shed a tear for one another" (pg 51). This resonates because I find it to be the truth. People live different lives and take separate paths that makes everyone unique but in the end every persons life ends in death. To me this means that at the end of the day no matter the actions of a person they are still human and the same as I am.

"We can destroy what we have written, but we can not unwrite it". This quote is by Anthony Burgess from the book "A Clockwork Orange". I like this quote because it tells me that when i have done something, people and even i can forget about it, but it can never be undone. Once one realizes that you can not undo the past but can forget, is when one can move on and live life. i have all made mistakes in the past and as soon as i forget and move on; not worrying about the past, i still need to be careful not to make the same mistakes again, because the first ones will never go away in the first place.

“If you're a bird... I'm a bird...”
― Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook

Everyone is familiar with the movie “The Notebook”, and I would have to say that I am a fan. It’s about the story of two people that fall in love, typically chick flick I know. I’m usually not a fan of these kinds of movie but for some reason this one touched my heart.
I like this quote because it shows the relationship between to people that care deeply for one another. It shows the support they have for each other and the love between them and how they would do anything to be like them.

"The marks humans leave are too often scars." - John Green in "The Fault in Out Stars"
This quote sums up not only my life but everyone out there. Especially during this time of our lives we let the words of someone else hurt us and bring us down. We care about what others think about ourselves and let that get in the way of who we want to be. However, this is not just demonstrated throughout high school years. Unfortunately it is something everyone has to live with for the rest of their lives whether we want to or not. This quote also not only applies to what people say about you to your face or behind your back but also just the effects they have on your life. People will come and go during the span of your life. They will hurt you before they leave and do everything they can to bring them down with you. However, we have to learn that some people are meant to stay in our lives to help us and some are going to bring us down. WE just have to learn to be strong enough and get through whatever people life throws your way.

"And when people try to minimize your pain they are doing you a disservice. And when you try to minimize your own pain you're doing yourself a disservice. Don't do that. The truth is that it hurts because it's real. It hurts because it mattered. And that's an important thing to acknowledge to yourself. But that doesn't mean that it won't end, it won't get better. Because it will."
My favorite part of this quote is the last two lines, "But that doesn't mean that it won't end, it won't get better, because it will" because of the things I have witnessed through my life and the things I have personally been through, I have always proved myself wrong thinking 'this will never end.' No matter where you are or what situation you're in "it gets better" will apply somewhere in it. It teaches me to never lose hope or faith in myself.

The quote “rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth” was written by Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden. The book was written during the Transcendentalism period in literature. This quote reminds us that the truth is an important aspect within our lives. One cannot love without the truth. Also one can get much more with truth than any money amount. Fame is also nothing without the truth. I personally like this quote because it compares what everyone strives to get to truth. It says that truth is the most important thing in life, and I agree with that.

This quote from the book "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher resonates to me; “You can't go back to how things were. How you thought they were. All you really have is...now.” This quote reminds me to not dwell on past events. What has happened cannot be changed and we have to adjust to life's twists and turns. We must seize every moment we have and live in the "now" in order to keep moving forward, no matter where life takes us. I think this quote is a good philosophy to live by and it helps me move forward from my struggles when it seems hardest.

"Extraordinary things are always hiding in places people never think to look."

This quote is found in the book My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I love this quote because it is one hundred percent true to how most people live their day to day lives. Learning how to live in spite of the things that scare you the most is the key to all happiness you could ever experience. Being able to face fears and test limits is how you are able to achieve greatness and find yourself. Without exploring the dark corners and blindly walking out on a limb, how can you ever expect to find the extraordinary? If there is no little extra something in everything you do there will never be any extraordinary, just ordinary.

The quote I chose is "you'll regret the choices you didn't make rather then the choices you did" I like this quote because it is so true, you'll regret not doing something and missing out on great opportunitys that you could of have, so instead of not taking choices, you should because you'll never know what could of happend

My quote this week is " there are no shortcuts in the quest for perfection" - 5 lessons by Ben hogan. This quote tells a lot about me and the way I do things because you get out what you put into things . I always try my hardest and put in work weather it is sports or school. I find sports a lot like school if you don't practice in sports you will never get any better and if you don't do your homework your grades will never get better. I believe that if you don't put forth your best all the time, you have lived an unfulfilled life

One of my favorite quotes are by William shakespeare "Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none." This quotes means that as a person we should all just in general be nice to each other even if we don't like one another. We should only trust the most valued people in our lives because the small important relationships are the most important and those people are the mot trustworthy.

"Why did so many grown-ups want to be young, she wondered, when it took so long to grow old? It was like going on a million-mile road trip then wanting to turn around without getting out of the car." I love this quote because I feel as teenagers all we want is to be adults. We take our youth for granted yet it'll be gone in the blink of an eye. When we see adults reminiscing on their past and wanting to be young again, we become mind bottled as to why they'd want to be teenagers again. I feel it teaches us that we need to enjoy our youth.

My quote is from the book "Tuesdays With Morie" by Mitch Albom. The quote is "once you learn how to live, you learn how to die" this is a very powerful quote saying that no matter what one does, death is inevitable and it will come no matter what. This is significant to me because it shows that things will come full circle and brings the significance that everyone will die, no matter how important you are in life. That just seems like a very powerful quote to me for someone to realize their mortality.

“Don't be afraid your life will end; be afraid that it will never begin” by Grace Hansen
This quote is big to me because I am deathly afraid to die. I mean who isn’t? I believe this quote says that you need to stop worrying about when life will end and live life to the fullest. If you keep worrying about when life will end then you won’t be able to live life the way you want to because you are too worried about when you will die. She is saying that life won’t begin until you stop worrying about dying.

The quote I pick that I've known for a long time is from J.R.R. Tolkin's The Lord of the Rings.
-“The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places.
But still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps, the greater.”
The reason why this quote is big to me is it shows me that in my darkest times in life I look and realize that I'm not alone. It shows me that in my times of peril it will pass and leave, and from it will be someone better than I once was before.

“If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun” -Katharine Hepburn
I love this quote. Think of all the times that you have broken the rules and how much fun that you had. You need to live life a little bit and have some fun! Break the rules sometimes and see how much fun that you have. Whenever I disobey the rules it’s the best time of my life because I feel hard and it’s fun to do something you’re not allowed to do.

This is a quote from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It states, “One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving” (Coelho 128). This quote is really powerful because the whole book indirectly talks about the power of love. That if you really feel love for someone, you will find that person no mater what happens. This quote relates to that because many people try to come up with reasons to why they love someone or are put on the spot by the one they love. I like to look at it like this; take a minute to pause and to define the word love. Now, if you can’t do it, or aren’t able to do so without using someone’s name, then you are in love. That’s what love is. It’s an indescribable feeling that is meant to be felt by everyone, but not everyone is able to experience.

My quote comes from Tuesday's with Morrie. I am not a big book reader, but when I first read this book I couldn't stop myself from reading it twice. Many quotes and lessons shared by Morrie have impacted me but this one quotes in particular stands out to me. Morries says, "You can run up and down the block and go crazy. I can't do that. I can't go out. I can't run. I can't be out there without the fear of getting sick. But you know what? I apperciate that window more than you do." This quotes rienforces Morrie's mindset that the little things are what matter the most. I take for granted the little things in life, I don't apperciate a window like Morrie did during his illness. This quote puts things in better perspective for me. I try to make the little things count, I don't want to take for granted all the thimgs life has to offer me. Whether is be spending time with family or friends or getting the chance to make someone smile. I try to not to pass up those opportunities, having this quote in the back of my mind helps.

“Life is a series of pulls back and forth. You want to do one thing, but you are bound to do something else. Something hurts you, yet you know it shouldn’t”. This quote comes from the book Tuesdays with Morrie, written by Mitch Albom. This quote mainly stood out to me because it is relatable. Everyone faces a situation where every thought is a contradiction, and every option may not be the best, or what is the best doesn’t feel like it is. I know that I am constantly in situations that are similar and I’m always afraid that I’ll make the wrong decision, and then walk away dwelling on the “what if’s”. I feel like what this quote is trying to say is that when you’re pushed into a situation and you’re forced to make a decision that you’re unsure of, you have to what makes you happy because at the end of the day that’s what really matters.

This quote is told by the French philosophe Voltaire. He was one of the first true free thinkers of his time. These words are some of my founding ideals of morality. I believe that everyone should be able to throw in their two cents worth, even if you don't agree with them. It is the essence of democracy.

This sounds out of character, but one of my favorite quotes was by Dr. Seuss and he once said "Dont cry because it's over, but smile because it happened." This quote always brought me a sense of security. This quote reminds me to always remember the good even when the out come is bad. Not everything is for the worse, but just because it turned for the worse dont hang your head because at one point it was good, hold on to that good memory because you will never know when it will be all you have.

A quote that has stuck with me when reading Neil Shusterman's Unwind is “Stupid dreams. Even the good ones are bad, because they remind you how poorly reality measures up.”. To me, this quote seems to sum up society in general. We come to hope and believe in ourselves when it comes to setting goals, but when reality finally sets in, we end up filled with nothing but disappointment. It may sound extremely pessimistic, but unfortunately, it’s the sad truth.

" 'Stuff your eyes with wonder,' he said, 'live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask no guarantees, ask for no security, there never was such an animal. And if there were, it would be related to the great sloth which hangs upside down in a tree all day every day, sleeping its life away. To hell with that,' he said, 'shake the tree and knock the great sloth down on his ass.' Pg 183 [Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451] For some reason when I re-read Fahrenheit 451 i really like this quote, to me it speaks about getting out into the world and doing things that you want. Don't let anything hold you back and be do what might seem crazy to others, be you. Experience everything for yourself cause its a adventure waiting to be explored. This quote reminds me to do what I want, not to just blend in; to be extraordinary and be myself.

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

""Money is not a substitute for tenderness, and power is not a sunstitue for tenderness." (125)"

I chose this quote said by Morrie because I think that society today forgets that life is not all about having a lot of money and expensive taste as well as it is not about having a lot of power. Sure, those two factors can be nice to have... but life is about learning and growing; inspiring; dreaming; and loving. These five things do not require money or power to be accomplished. But these are 5 things that are required to live a great life.

Voltaire said, "To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize." I've always admired this quote because it gives us a warning of the subtle strength of powerful individuals and organizations (Especially political ones) that is especially poignant today with the recent government leaks that show just how intrusive it has become, or in the scandals of the Catholic church that showed that those who would criticize the church's doctrine or its priests would be threatened with banishment (excommunication).

It is important because to many people get wrapped up in trying to get good grade while at the same time they are waisting away the fun in there lives. It is important to have fun with your lives aswell
