Art and its purpose

We have been looking at the author's purpose in the songs we listen to for Music Mondays.  However, author's purpose is present in any text we read, any art piece constructed, any movie created, and so on. The way we see art differs from person to person just like the way we hear a song is different from person to person.  I enjoy street art.  I find it to be incredibly interesting and I love the commentary it makes about society.  However, the word art has so many connotations.
The word "Art" like any word is subjective.  We see art everyday and do not stop to appreciate it. Go to the site, Huffington Post, and look at what the different individuals say about the role or definition of art. Once you have have read through those definitions, go to the below websites and choose two art pieces to discuss.

What to discuss:
1. Give the title of each art piece before you discuss it. (If the art piece does not have a name, describe it as best as you can.)
2. Explain which artist's definition applies to each artwork.
3. Explain what you see when you look at the art piece.
4. What is the purpose behind each artist's piece of artwork? What is their message for society?

Websites to find the artwork:

2. http://www.streetartutopia.com/?p=8241

As always, keep all posts school appropriate!

The first piece of art is a tree with many different colored bands go all the way up(covering the entire tree). The artist’s definition that applies is by Robert Motherwell. His quote is the following: “Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it." The tree resembles life and is art all in one. What I see in this piece is bright colors along a lively tree. I believe the purpose behind the artist’s piece of artwork is to define life. I believe he/she is trying to say that life it better in color and you have to notice amazing aspects to feel a sense of happiness or appreciation for all that life has to offer.
The second piece of art is Cocito. The artist’s definition that applies to this artwork is by Paul Klee. The definition is the following: "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." At first glance you see people crowded around a hole in the ground. However, when you look closer you can see people drawn on the ground that are desperate for survival. The artist gives it a 3-D affect. The artist purpose is to show that people in our country are dying off because of cruel punishment and it needs to come to an end. He/she is bringing awareness to this issue.

The first artwork is called, "Waiting in Vain". The definition of art is expressed by Paul Klee,"Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." This applies to the art because I see a man with dying flowers. One can assume that the artist is sad about something, maybe a broken heart. This tells that one cannot see what someone is feeling, that someone has to express his or her feelings and the artist used art to do so. The purpose of "Waiting in Vain" is to show that any action someone does, it can affect someone else deeply.

The second piece of art is called, "Protect your Bees!". Twyla Tharp's definition, "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home." describes the artwork. I see bees and a bee farmhouse on a wall. The definition applies to the painting because someone used creativity to create the bees. Using creativity makes the artist feel like he or she is in his or her own world and away from home mentally, not physically. The artwork is trying to tell people to protect one's values or it will go away.

The first artwork is called, "Waiting in Vain". The definition of art is expressed by Paul Klee,"Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." The picture is of a man with dying flowers. You can tell by his expression that he is sad and upset . The purpose of the piece is to show the effects of mistakes or hardships in life.

The second piece is called "Street Work Solidarity" it shows figures climbing the sides os the steps. The authors purpose was to show how life can be a struggle and you have to work hard, but in the end you can achieve what you want.

The first piece of art is a tree with many different colored bands go all the way up. The artist’s definition that applies is by Robert Motherwell. His quote is the following: “Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it." The tree represent life and the many different stages of it. How we grow up and change over time. The colors represent how you change and become what "color" you really are and how it makes you become who you are.

The second piece isa women that has been cut out of a picture and is sitting on the side smoking. It seems like she is a slave and that she "quit" doing her job. The authors purpose was to show the strength that some slaves had and the strength and courage it took to stand up for themselves

The first piece i chose was the limbs painted like colored pencils. i believe the artists definition that applies most is Damien Hirst. He says "Art is childish and childlike". This is perfect for this piece because colored pencils take me back to my childhood where the worst thing that could happen was not having the right color for my pictures. The message is to remain young at heart because you grow older everyday so enjoy it while it lasts. The second piece i chose is the wave mural. The definition that i think applies well with this piece is Twyla Tharp. She says, "Art is the only way of running away without leaving home". This applies because when an artists paints a scene like an ocean or mountains it transports them to that place without actually going there in reality, just like that giant wave in this painting. The purpose here is that nature is mighty and beautiful because the wave takes over the entire house, engulfing it in its beauty.

The first piece of artwork I chose was called "Reflections" in this painting you see 4 individuals looking themselves in a pool of water. This piece of artwork fits the definition that says, "Art does not reproduce what is visible, it makes things visble." This goes along with the idea that the way we look to ourselves may not be how others percieve us. This definition is basically saying, art does not lie.
The second piece of artwork I chose was painting of a large bird chasing a man into a door painted on a old beat up wall in Spain. The defintion that fits this piece is, "Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without." It amazes me how an artist can look at something like an old beat up wall and have the ability to turn it into something incredible. I definitely do not have an artist's outlook because I could never take something like a old beat up alley wall and turn it into something amazing. It is true when definition basically says life would be boring without art.

The first piece of art was the picture of the two little boys writing all over the walls. This piece applies to the definition from Jean Sibelius that states, "Art is the signature of civilizations" This piece shows us that our culture is teaching kids things that will effect their future. We instill ways of life in children when their young, so they grow up in that way. Here it shows that our society is potentially corrupting the future generations.

The street art by Banksy that says "Follow your dreams : Cancelled" fits into the definition given by Pablo Picasso that says, "Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth, at least the truth that is given to us to understand." This piece is bluntly showing the reality of life sometimes. Everyone has dreams that they are trying to accomplish or follow, but many times those dreams don't come true because of something that happens in that person's life.

The first painting is of a man washing away cave drawings on a wall with a power washer. The best definition for this art is by Jean Sibelius. He said that "art is the signature of civilizations." This painting shows how in today's society, we tend to wipe away our history for modern uses. The purpose of the painting is to persuade us to stop destroying our history. It is kind of sad to see this, but the message is important.

The second painting is of the words "art doesn't help people" and a young girl writing below it "people help people." The definition that best fits this is by Georges Braque. He said, "art is meant to disturb. Science reassures." This matches this because the poor young girl writing this makes us sad. We do not like to think about people living like that. The play on emotions is what makes us want to do something about it. That is the author's purpose.

Cocito: "Art is meant to disturb, Science reassures." -Georges Braque

I see several people stuck in a cement-like mixture, unable to escape.

I think that this art piece is meant to give a very grim look on poverty and how inescapable it is to come out of it.

Wild Rodeo: "Art is the signature of civilizations." -Jean Sibelius

I see a portal into the past. Several "Cowboys" are attempting to break the horses that they ride.

I think that the purpose of this piece is to present the past to the viewer. It is to remind us of the way of life that people lived long ago.

The first piece of artwork I chose was the side of the building that was to seem as if the corner was being peeled back created by Miha Artnak. The definition of art is by Pablo Piccaso stating, "Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand." The corner being peeled back represents what we do not see and how beautiful things are but we just have yet to unveil them for ourselves. We do not understand the beauty that there really is because we are too busy believing the lie that the world here is evil and unsatisfying. When in reality it can be something extremely beautiful if you just let it.
The second piece of artwork i chose was the one with the four hands spelling out 'love' on the side of a building. The definition is stated; "Art is the Queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world." As said by Leonardo da Vinci. The picture reflects this because love is known all throughout the world and through generations. From the elder, to adults, teens even infants experiencing the love given to them from their parents or guardians. Love concurs all and well known through all generations.

The first piece of art I choose was a sign of Batman and another superhero that is in the shape of a circle and has a red border. The definition of art that applies to this piece is "Art is childish and childlike" by Damien Hirst. When I look at this piece of art I am reminded of my childhood when I used to run around pretending I was a super hero. The purpose of the piece which is to bring the viewer back to their childhood and to help them it.
The second piece of art I choose was a painting on a building of two children drawing pictures on the wall. The definition that applies to this piece of art is "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." by Paul Klee. When I look at this piece I see the beauty in not on the paint of the children but also the childish scribbles. The purpose of this piece was to show how even the drawing of children are considered art and that everyone can create art.

The first piece of art is called "Ghetto." I think the definition that fits this piece of art is the definition by Leonardo da Vinci. His definition says, "Art is the Queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world." When I see this piece I see people struggling and trying to escape the ghetto. The artist is trying to make a point about poverty. His art style shows how poverty has been around for a very long time. This art shows the artists aversion towards poverty and how they think it should be fixed.
The second piece of artwork I chose was a painting of child's face across side of a building. The definition I chose is by Damien Hurst which says, "Art is childish and childlike." When I see this piece I see a child making a silly face painted across a large, city building. I think the author is trying to emphasize the importance of retaining a childish spirit even into adulthood.

Street Art Love- This photo is of the side of a building where hands have been shaped to spell out the words love in what looks like a shadow on the wall. Paul Klee states that "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." I feel that this quote describes this piece because not everyone can look at an empty wall and see the greatness that it can become. With the hands spelling out the words love it shoes how simple something can be to be looked at as art, and how the empty wall was used to make the words stand out and be visible. When I see this piece I see creativity. It’s so simple that no one would have thought of it except the artist. Behind each drawing or painting there is meaning, whether the artist wanted to express something or saw a moment of opportunity. The message that can be see here is to slow down and remember to love one another, and with the image so large it isn’t hard to miss making it stand out to by passers.

Batman and Robin- This photo look to be of a street sign that plays on the characters of Batman and Robin. This piece has a sense of humor behind it, “Art is childish and childlike”. Damien Hirst’s feelings about art are defined though the Batman and Robin sign. Many kids grow up with super heroes and look up to them. Making a street sign with these characters on them is yet simple and yet childish. When I look at this I see the comical side of it and think how funny it would be to actually see a sign like this walking down the street. The purpose behind this artwork is to show the simpler side to art, and how it doesn’t have to be big or crazy to be noticed. The message for society is too not be so serious and to enjoy those childhood moments, and to relax and have fun every now and then.

The first piece of art is named "Yarn Bombing," a tree with colorful stripes ascending all the way up to the branches. The best definition of art to describe this piece is: "Art is a bang/blast," as explained by Tarō Okomoto. The tree is just an ordinary tree, until there was all of these different colors added to it, giving a simple object a bold look. When I look at this piece, I see a symbol of growth and change. I believe the creator of this piece is trying to implicate the beauty of change in life by adding colors to a tree, which is a perfect icon of everlasting growth and change.

The second piece is named "Mario," which depicts a small pixelated Mario character below a pipe and next to another one, using a pop culture reference. The quote that best describes this work is: "Art is childish and childlike," as said by Damien Hirst. When I look at this piece, I see a recreation of carefree moments, when I have time to play a video game like Mario and enjoy it. The artist is trying to send the message to people to take time out of the day to enjoy little things and to not take life so seriously. There is always time to have fun, even in our busy lives.

The first piece of art is the picture of a man on the wall with "Follow your dreams" written on it, and over top of it, it says "Cancelled." This relates to Leonardo da Vinci's quote, "Art is the Queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to all the generations of the world." This relates because this picture on the wall is communicating to society about reality that not just one certain generation would follow. I believe that he/she is trying to say that they have tried to follow their dreams but there is always something in the way to stop those dreams, therefore not letting them do so.
The second piece of art I chose is the stack of tree trunks that are made to look like colored pencils. This goes with Paul Klee's quote, "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." I feel as if the artist of this real-life piece is trying to send a message by making something as simple as a pile of tree trunks into something bigger and brighter. His message may be no matter what situation you are in try to make something big out of something small, something out of nothing.

The first picture I chose was a building with a person's face on it. The definition I chose that I believe best describes the picture would be "Art does not reproduce what is visible, it makes things visible" said Paul Klee. Sometimes in society a person can walk day by day and not get recognized. Just like that building in the picture. If it was a regular building, no one would think its special, but because it has a person's face on it, more people will notice it and see its beauty.
The secoond image I chose was called "Lego bricks in the wall-2". The defenition that best describes this picture was said by Twyla Tharp, she said "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home". In the picture there was a wall of bricks, and where some bricks were missing, there were lego bricks. They were still bricks, but they were colorul and they got to be different, but still the same. When someone either makes art, or looks at it, they get lost in it. Their mind goes into the world that the painting is in, while their body is still in the real world. They are leaving home without actually leaving.

This first piece of art that really stood out to me does not have a name. It is street art of a man sitting holding a sign saying “J’ai faim” which means “I’m hungry” in French. Next to the man is a woman, who is dressed nicely and talking on her phone, while in her other hand I a little girl holding candy who notices the man with the sign. The definition of art that goes with this piece of work is “Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand.” – Pablo Picasso. I believe that what the artist is trying to say in this piece is that we ignore the people who need help, because we don’t want to go out of our way. The more we ignore the people, who desperately need help, the less we think about it, and the less it bothers us.
The second piece of art that I noticed does not have a name either. The street art is of a person, only showing part of their face, mainly their mouth. Their hand is holding a tree, appearing to be the person’s next meal. Their mouth is large, and their teeth are buildings and skyscrapers. The definition that best fits the art piece is “Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it” - Robert Motherwell. When I look at this piece, the definition is obvious because in my opinion the person’s mouth resembles cities and urbanization. It looks as if they’re about to eat a tree because urbanization is constantly taking away nature and its beauty.

My first piece of art displays multiple trees that have been cut down and sharpened to look like colored pencils. Damien Hirst’s definition, “Art is childish and childlike" best describes this artwork. This definition works because coloring represents a large part in everyone’s childhood. This artist’s message is the direct transformation of natural resources to everyday materials.
My second piece of art shows a staircase painted to look like piano keys. The definition, "Art is the signature of civilizations" explains the art because music plays a big role in society. The message behind the artist’s work is that music is everywhere. Everywhere we go we see and hear music.

The first piece i chose was "The Tempest". The artist's definition used is by Paul Klee, "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible". What I see in this artwork is a dead monster with his soul leaving him with a God on the side, taking the soul from him. The purpose behind this piece is to show society that everyone has a soul either bad or good, it will be taken out from you, but where it goes can very from how well of a person you are.

The second piece is Hossegor Beaches Landes South West of France wave on the side of a house. The definition of art is by Twyla Tharp "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home". In this piece of art i see a ocean wave on the side of a house. Not much, simple, but to the point. When my family goes to the ocean our home away from home is our beach house, so when i see this wave i am "running away" from home, when im not actually leaving. The ocean/beach is our escape. The purpose of this piece is to show society that in an ocean when you are in the waves, being taken out, to escape from reality you go with the flow and lose your mind in a wave.

My first piece of artwork is a few tree branches that have one end on each of them sharpened to a point and colored to look like crayons. The definition I chose to represent this piece was by Damien Hirst who said "art is childish and child like". This particular piece of art is a friendly reminder to have fun. It tells society to relax and to go with the flow of things. Nobody is ever to old to have fun.
My second piece of artwork is a stair case that is decorated with mosaic pieces to look like a river. The definition I chose to represent it was by Ad Reinhardt who said "art is art, everything else is everything else." I think this staircase does an excellent job of describing that definition because it shows you a different perspective to look at something through the artwork. It tells us as a society that art is always there and sometimes it is what we need to make it through everything in our lives. There is no escaping art.

The first piece of art I chose was a wall with shadows of hands spelling out the word "love". This relates to Robert Motherwell's quote of, "Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it". Love is not a necessity for survival, but life is nothing without they joy love brings into one's life. When I see this picture I see the need of bringing out the simple things in life and embracing them, and it doesn't take as much effort as we think, just as a simple shadow is a natural, almost effortless thing. I think the artist's purpose behind this piece is to show that simplicity is what brings the majority of every day happiness to our lives, such as a good laugh, a small compliment, or sitting around with people you love and that love you back. I think love itself is a piece of art because it takes genuine commitment and patience to see the beauty of it all.
The second piece is one of man painted on a side of a bridge holding something. In the next picture, it is evident that a light that is now shining is the fire to what looks to be a torch that the man in holding. This connects to Paul Klee's quote, "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." At first, a light under a bridge serves the one purpose as providing light to drivers in a dark tunnel. With this piece, the light also serves as the fictional character's source of light through whatever journey he may be going through. This shows that society may not always see people the way the see themselves. They may not see other points of views or understand other's stories because they can only see the original copy of the person, the one without the light.

The first art piece is called Ghetto. The caption I chose is by Friedrich Nietzsche, "Art is essentially the affirmation, the blessing, and the deification of existence." This applies because it is saying that art is everywhere and everything in existence. It doesnt matter if you are rich or poor or live in the "Ghettos," everything surrounding you is still an art piece in its own way. When i look at the art piece i see people being trapped in very poor places and not having any rights or opportunites to better themselves. I think the purpose behind it is to show society that people living in the Ghettos are trapped there. They want to get out but they are simply trapped. The second art work i chose is the one of the white and black stick like figure holding and umbrella in the colorful rain. The caption is byElbert Hubbard and says, "Art is not a thing; it is a way." I think this caption matches because it tells that it isnt just a peice of work. It can be a way someone lives or a way that or who they truly are. When i look at this piece i see a person that is different from what society wants them to be. They are different from everyone else and they dont like that. The purpose is to accept people for who they truly are and not try to get they to be who you want them to be. Their message is to be yourself and do not let others change you.

The first piece of artwork is called "Ghetto". The definition that applies to this artwork would be the definition of "Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand." When I look at this painting I see people trapped inside boxes without an escape. These people seem to be un happy also. I believe the message for society is that the artists is trying to state when families are stuck in the "ghetto" parts of the world they are unable to escape and achieve a better life. The second piece of art is "Cocito". The artist’s definition that applies to this artwork is "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." When I see this artwork I see people crowded around a hole in the ground where people are trapped in the hole. The artist gives it a 3-dimensoinal look. The artist purpose is to show that people in our country are dying because of harsh punishment and it needs to come to finally stop.

One artwork I found didn't have a title. It was a painting of a girl crying and splatter paint on top painted on a brick wall. The other artwork I chose was a painting of two little kids drawing scribbles on the side of a building.

When it comes to artwork, I believe that Paul Klee's definition seems to fit the best, which is "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." I think this because I believe that all artwork tends to express an emotion that seems to be difficult to put into words or makes a statement about one's beliefs and how one truly feels.

In the first artwork, I see a young girl crying. Out of fear. Out of depression. Out of neglect. I see a girl that is too small for anyone to notice her and tries to add color to her life (hence the splatter paint) to try to cover up the depression, sadness, and loneliness that she was feeling. I believe that the purpose of this piece was to explain that more people feel helpless, depressed, and alone more than we, as a people, realize. The artist of this piece wanted to bring awareness to society.

In the second artwork, I saw two young kids with their pants sagged scribbling and drawing on the wall. I believe that this piece represents a person's loss of childhood and their to get it back. In one of the kid's drawings, it seems that he drew himself with his dad. Perhaps this is a longing for that father figure. Perhaps his father was the only one there for him. Regardless, this piece to me seems to be a longing for a lost childhood. I believe that the purpose of this piece was to persuade others into enjoying the little things while they last. The artist of this piece wants to get people to appreciate their lives.

The first piece or artwork is the one on a wall with three people standing three separate stairs and it looks like the dad is standing on the second stair helping his kid up the step on the first stair. The artist’s definition that it resembles is “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home” (Tharp). I see a family working together and accomplishing tough life events in this piece of art. I believe the purpose of this is to send out a message to society that when working in unison, nothing is stronger than the bonds of family.
The second piece of artwork is the one on a wall with the word cancelled out the words follow your dreams with a man next to it with a saddened facial expression and a bucket of paint in his hand. The artist’s definition that it resembles is “Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand” (Picasso). I see a man who realized that achieving his dreams isn’t possible and now is broadcasting that message to everyone who has their heart set on their dream whatever it may be. I believe the artist’s purpose for this piece of art, when applied to the definition that I picked from Pablo Picasso, is to teach people that achieving their dreams is not easy, and when continuing to fail over and over again, just do not give up because that is the path to success. Eventually they will get there, they will win, and they will succeed.

My first piece of art is called “Street Art Love-From the Baltimore Love Project.” I believe that the artist Elbert Hubbard’s definition defines this piece. His definition was “Art is not a thing; it is a way.” To me, this piece of art is explaining that everyone should love everybody and that we should spread love around the world. Hubbard’s definition helps defines this because this piece is a different way of spreading this message. My second piece of art is called “Clour Rain.” I believe that the artist Twyla Tharp’s definition describes this piece. Her definition was “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” To me, this piece is explaining a world full of beautiful things and someone is hiding under an umbrella, missing all of the beautiful things about life. I believe that the purpose of this piece is to explain this message and tell people to look around and enjoy life.

The first piece of art that stuck out to me was Gluttony. I felt Pablo Picasso's definition of art; "Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand." best fit this painting. Gluttony is Kurt Wenner's way of visualizing gluttony on of the "Seven Deadly Sins". To me this painting is meant to remind or perhaps check society. In our capitalistic society greed and gluttony almost seem like a reward that you are supposed to desire and accept. This painting is there to remind us that gluttony is not something to be proud of or desire for it is one of the seven deadly sins.
The second piece of art that stuck out to me was the brick wall that was intertwined with Lego pieces. I felt that Damien Hirst's definition of art; "Art is childish and childlike" was best applied to it. It is a piece of art that brings a smile to people passing by and reminds them of a piece of their childhood. It has no practical use other than to make you feel good, just like our childhoods. When we were young we didn't worry about going to work or improving society just feeling good and being happy.

The first piece of artwork I chose was from the first link given. The piece is called "Ghetto." Paul Klee's definition of art, which is "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible" is the definition that describes this piece of art. This is because Ghetto shows that there is struggle in the world. The artist did not create a piece to start the phenomena of struggle, but to show that there is. The individuals in the piece are naked and in cardboard boxes. Also, it is filthy and crammed where the boxes are. This piece shows struggle is visible. The purpose of the artwork is to show art and reality of the world is not always pretty and picture perfect. Their message for society is that it is okay to struggle, because that is sometimes considered the most beautiful of art.
The second piece of artwork I chose is from the second link provided. The piece is uploaded to the website as "street_art_big_size_67_herakut" There is a girl with a bit of a skeptical, yet angry, look on her face. She is crouched down with a pen in her hand. She scribbled, "Art doesn't help people. People help people." This is all drawn onto the side of a building. Pablo Picasso's definition of art is "Art is what you can get away with." I think this applies to this art piece because people will argue that art is what helps people, but if you can get away with being convincing as to why people help people and not art, then the piece is art and you have a valid argument. When I see the piece of artwork, I see a quote that is often written into another idea. Gun Control. There is a quote, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." This both are great quotes. People see the art in their minds, their souls, and they express it. Then it influences people. Similar to the fact that people shoot guns, and that bullet kills someone. It's not the art by itself or the gun itself. It is society. That kind of explains what I see when I look at the piece of art and what the message is about society. I believe the purpose to the art work is to open people's eyes up to realize that people create what we want. And if it is convincing enough to get away with, then Pablo Picasso would call it art.

My first piece of art doesn’t have a name. It is a painting of Mario from the game jumping into a pipe. I believe Damien Hirst’s definition of art explains this picture. I see Mario jumping through a pipe taking another path and coming out the other pipe somewhat a different person. The purpose was to show people that if you take another path to something you may end up being different. My second painting is a painting of hop scotch and the one square has a deep hole that you could fall into. I believe that Elbert Hubbard’s definition represents this painting. I see that you need to jump over the hole to make it to the other side. You need to learn to make it over obstacles and the thing life brings at you. I believe that it’s saying you need to make it over the bad times in life and move on with life. This tells society that anyone can live life if you make it over the tough times and obstacles that life brings you.

The first piece of artwork I looked at was Dies Irae. It comes from the poem of the same name where the lasts or the worthy souls go to god after the last trumpet plays summoning them. I see men grateful to be in heaven and at peace with death for already crossing that threshold. It is religious in its purpose, a light to others to try and be among the last of the worthy souls when the trumpet plays its final note.
The second one I looked at is Neptune. Basically it shows Neptune, originally the Greek god of the sea Posiden before the Romans came and renamed them all. The painting shows Neptune striking his trident down on an unfortunate vessel. The only purpose it serves it show how important he was in the ancient world, for in today's world no one worships paganism anymore.

Times Square: The quote i think that goes along best with this particular piece (Filled with angels, death, a phoenix and a queen) is the one by Nietzsche, that, "Art is essentially the affirmation, the blessing, and the deification of existence." Here we see a natural part of life (death) immortalized and deified by the author, with black wings and a scythe to harvest his victims. When I look to the art piece, i see a familiar problem with humans, that we deify our loves in life and personify our fears (A subject I would LOVE to have us do an open discussion in class about, hint hint nudge nudge please :)), and here we have both deified and personified our fear of death as an angel. The author's purpose, so far as I can tell, is to draw attention to the thought that up above us are great forces, watching over us, some culling us from the throngs of huddled masses, some directing our flow of life, and others simply watching, waiting for us to get up and DO something, anything at all, to pique their interest.

The second piece, Babel, is best explained by Andy Warhol, in that,"Art is what you can get away with." The biblical story of the Tower of Babel is the most infamous story in Ameri-Euro culture of the dangers of human arrogance. Warhol would probably agree that the Tower was a form of art, until its construction was ended by god. The artist may be attempting to draw attention to human arrogance and the punishments for it ( note the separation of the builders and those of them falling to their deaths), but I also see the idea that humanity's intense fixation on religion and dogmatic worship will hold us back more than anything else that troubles our collective psyche.

i really like the piece of art where the stone wall was completed by lego bricks and it just fit so perfectly together. i see that some old deteriorated things are fixed by a new colorful material. The purpose for the artist is that he/she is showing how things can work together so perfectly and the message for society is that we need to use our old legos because they look cool when they are used in this way.
The second peice i selected was a 3D art chalk drawing of a mouth coming out of the earth and a pill with a triple R symbol on it. It is a metaphor for the Earth healing itself because it is sick and its taking medicine. The medicine is recycling. The purpose of the artists work is to persuade people that they should recycle and the earth is sick.

the first piece is a picture of Starry night painted on a wall. the definition that applies is "Art is either plagiarism or revolution." because they are just remaking something that someone else created.
The second piece is called The rise of the Fall. The definition that applies would be "Art is a lie that makes us realize truth, at least the truth that is given us to understand." we see the corner lifting up to reveal a new world, and the artists purpose is to show that there are new and different things to be experienced everyday.

The first piece of artwork is called "Office Stress". I believe Georges Braque's definition where he states "Art is meant to disturb. Science reassures" applies to this piece of artwork. This applies to the piece because I find it to be disturbing, it is not a very happy piece of work, but rather more disorganized. I see many people in their offices lost, confused, frustrated, stressed, and given up on what they needed to accomplish. I believe the purpose is to explain the office life of many workers. The author wanted to show the realities and truth behind working people. He wanted to display that it is not as easy as some may think, but that it is hard work and can be very stressful.
The second piece of artwork is called "Ghetto". Jean Sibelius's definition "Art is the signature of civilizations." is displayed in this piece of artwork. It is showing the situation much of our civilization is in. I see run down, poor town, with people suffering and trying to get out of the harsh life they are living. The purpose of the work is to define what poverty is. The author wants to show the rough life those in poverty live and that they are making an effort to escape from it, but that sometimes that is not possible.

In one of the images, there are hands spelling out 'love' on the side of a building. This could be showing the thought of art meaning something. Perhaps it an embassy building and the artist is trying to convey a message.
In another, there are trees that are cut down, and on them, there are tips that are colored like colored pencils. This could be showing how industrial we are.

The first piece that i chose was "Ghetto", "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." -Paul Klee seemed to go with this piece. At first glance a distraught number of people are seen with the emotion of sadness and desperation seen by their situation. The purpose being to depict the hard ships that many people must go through and that life isn't always so pretty.
The second piece "Office Stress", "Art is the signature of civilizations." I see the normal day life of an a adult being depicted through madness and a sense of urgency;no rest. While at the same time its seems as if technology is consuming and entangling the people, so that made me think that technology is being referenced as something that causes stress to our lives.

1.) Colored Pencil Trees
- Damien Hurst definition best describes this piece as he says "Art is childish and childlike." since it is a bunch of trees turned into colored pencils. I see a bunch of cut down trees which seem to be sharpened at the end and colored which seemed to represent colored pencils. I believe the message behind this picture is trees color the world, since he used them to represent color pencils
2.) Dies Irae
- Paul Klee best defines this piece as he says "Art does not reproduce what is visible; it makes things visible." since this art piece is an illusion to make you think there is a hole in the ground. WHen i look at this picture i see what would seem to come straight from a myth or legend a hole called "DIes Irae " with people who appear to be dead trying to crawl out of the hole. I feel that this art piece is just to mess with people as they walk cause that would defiantly startle me if i was walking towards it and i didn't see it until i was right next to it.

“It’s kind of hard to try to be like everyone else all the time. It’s okay to just be you sometimes.” This quote means a lot to me because there are so many people in the world and all of these people are all mostly followers instead of leader. There are times in your life when you need to decide if you are willing to go out there and be yourself and not let anyone make your decisions for you. I consider myself as a leader because no matter what happens in my life I will be the only one to make my own decision no matter the consequences for the better or the worst.
