Each generation sees a change in the roles assigned to women. When my mother was growing up, the expectation was for women to grow up, get married, have the 2.5 kids and the house. My generation had different gender expectations.
For this week's blog, think about the expectations being put on your generation. Examine how those roles are conveyed: television, movies, songs.
Your post should include the following information:
1. What roles or expectations are placed on women today?
2. How do you see those roles/expectations being conveyed?
3. What are your thoughts on those roles?

Roles that are being placed on women today are very different, depending on the type of person you are. Today, it is much different than the past. Now, women can vote, work the same jobs as men, and many more. I think that there are still some people out there that think that women are supposed to only cook, clean, and watch the kids. That is not true. I know many women that work while their husbands stay home, and I know many people that work with their husbands. It is usually men who think that roles for women HAVE to be assigned. I always see this being conveyed in tv and on social media, especially twitter. For example, there is a twitter account for men that tweet about how women should be in the kitchen making a sandwich. Why can't you make it yourself? oh, that's right, you're too busy sitting behind a screen running a dumb account. I think that women's roles in the world should be whatever it is that they want to do in life and whatever it is that make them happy. I think gender roles in general are stupid. Equality for all.
From being told to stay home, cook, clean, and take care of the children women's roles and expectations have changed over the years. Women now can go out and have the same job as a man, or even just stay home if they would please. society and the government say that women are equal and all of this but once a women goes out and participates in something that people believe men should do it gets commented on. For example women have just recently been allowed to go out and be apart of the war instead just staying on base and doing whatever. I see women trying to take a stand and go out and do these things but in 2016 it is still hard for everyone to be equal, and i believe equal is what we all should be.
Having kids and staying at home has changed in our society. Womans expectations have changed a lot to better their lives. Instead of staying at home and doing all of the chores, woman can not go out and do what they want in the world. They can find a job and chase their won career. It is portrayed that woman have their own choice to do what they feel best in life and do not have the pressure of only having one choice. Also we are pushing for equal pay and woman are only making 66cents of every doller men make and that needs to change if we want to keep this equality that the united sates is trying to get. My thoughts on this subject is it is good to see them succeed in life and do what they want to do as their job.
Today's roles for women have changed greatly since the time of women staying home and in the kitchen. Women now have to have a shape to their bodies, contain certain qualities, and be somewhat successful but not more than men. In commercials, women show perfect curves and makeup to please a man instead of being themselves. Having a perfect shape and meeting others expectations is the new thing. Jobs nowadays women are still fighting to be up at the top like how men have for many years. I personally am frustrated and annoyed that women cannot have what men have and the fact that women now have to have curves and "beauty". It is a fake type of beauty. It is not who the woman really is, it matters on the inside more than the outside.
Today's roles for women have changed in society today, back then women were expected to be a stay home mother. They were expected to be the ones to cook, clean, and to take care of the children. Now a days women are expected to have a decent job to help suppose their husband and kids. Still they help with cooking but they aren't expected to be the only ones doing the cooking, the husbands and maybe even the children can help too. I think todays roles for women are way better than how they were back in the day. Women shouldn't be expected to be the only ones doing everything in the house, i think women are equal to men and they should both play a part in the work life inside and outside of the house.
The expectations for women have changed greatly throughout the years. Back in the day women didn't leave the kitchen or the house work un attended. Women today are expected to have a successful high paying job but its odd for them to be more successful then men. On top of having a demanding job they should look good and maintain a hot little body. They should also come home from work have dinner ready and the kids getting their homework done. The Media is a prime example of showing us all the responsibilities women should have. I do not find it fair that men typically get to take it easy and not worry about as much as a women does even though they typically have the same amount of stress during the day.
Expectations for women now are much different from expectations years ago. Women now do not have to stay at home and clean the kitchen or take care of the house. They aren't expected to do that even though it still is a job that needs to be done, but mostly kids now do those chores. Women are now expected to get a good job and a great education. They aren't expected to stay home all day everyday to take care of the house while only the father works, but now both work. On top of working almost all day women do have some expectations that are ridiculous like always looking good and cooking for their husband and kids. Men should be able to cook for themselves or cook for their wives and family. Even though women are still expected to cook it isn't as much as back in the day. Sometimes men and children will help with cooking too. Women are getting treated more equal then they have been treated awhile back.
A play written by Daniel Faust and Kanye West
Act 1- The Defiling
I'm not a misogynist
I just like it when girls are massaging this
So mommy best advice is just to get on top of this
Cause you will never get on top of this
She wanted a kiss, but first make those lips give bliss
She only gotta head to give it
If i'm not the first she better easily give it
Only pay for one night stay at the Ritz
I won't even get you a towel when I spray on your tits
And I hate callin' women bitches, but the bitches love it
Searching for monogamy
I cut prude out of my mind like a lobotomy
The deeper they go the deeper my affections
She’s not lackluster but asking too many questions
For a baby ball buster,
She wanted love but I only ever lusted her
Act 2- The Fall
Now she's so self conscious
She has no idea what she's doing in college
That major that she majored in don't make no money
But she won't drop out, her parents will look at her funny
Now, tell me that ain't insecure
The concept of school seems so secure
Sophomore three years aint picked a career
She like fuck it, I'll just stay down here and do hair
Cause that's enough money to buy her a few pairs of new Airs
Cause her baby daddy don't really care
She's so precious with the peer pressure
Couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexus
She had hair so long that it looked like weave
Then she cut it all off now she look like Eve
And she be dealing with some issues that you can't believe
Single black female addicted to retail
Act 3- The Revenge
Met her at a beauty salon
With a baby Louis Vuitton
Under her underarm
She said I can tell you rock
I can tell by your charm
Far as girls you got a flock
I can tell by your charm and your arm
But I'm looking for the one
Have you seen her?
My psychic told me she have an ass like Serena
Trina, Jennifer Lopez, four kids
And I gotta take all they bad ass to show-biz
OK get your kids but then they got their friends
I pulled up in the Benz, they all got up in
We all went to Den and then I had to pay
If you fucking with this girl then you better be paid
You know why?
It take too much to touch her
From what I heard she got a baby by Busta
My best friend says she use to fuck with Usher
I don't care what none of y'all say I still love her
Act 4- Rising

She was supposed to buy your shorty TYCO with your money
She went to the doctor got lipo with your money
She walking around looking like Michael with your money
Should've got that insured got GEICO for your money, money, money
It's something that you need to have

18 years, 18 years
And on her 18th birthday he found out it wasn't his
The take away... Would guys want to do anything with a girl if sex was off the table...
In today’s society women have more rights than any of the women in previous generations. Women today have the right to vote, maintain a job, receive a higher education, and can join the military. Generations before have expected women to stay at home for raising children, housework, and taking care of their husband. They were not entitled to vote as well. As generations have progressed more and more rights are becoming available for women. My opinions on old generations ways of the roles of women are degrading. I think it is understandable for a mother to stay home for the children and to cook and clean. But women should have the choice to do that.
I believe that the expectations of women are changing in todays society. It is still not correct because there is still sexism alive in america but compared to previous generations women have more freedom. I believe that women are nowadays being more expected to have a higher education and get a job as compared to stay at home and raise kids. I saw those roles play out right in front of my eyes. My neighbors were a very nice couple who had a child during the time they lived next door. When their baby, delaine, was in her first year the husband stayed home and watched the kid while the wife went to work. I see children now getting engineering toys to provoke early thought processes. they do not make these toys gender specific and they encourage women to get their daughters to play with them also. I like the change america is undergoing because it creates more equality and more jobs and more wealth for the nation. that is how the role of women is changing.
I think that roles and expectations for women are different in todays society then they were many years ago. Woman have more rights and are able to be apart of more high status's then just staying at home and being a house wife. Woman are now in the army and have equal rights as any man. I feel that the role of women is still unfair only because they are still seen as the person to do all of the house work and cooking and cleaning, not more important things. I think that roles on woman are ridiculous because there should be equal rights and equal responsibilities for those who can meet up to them. Woman should be able to do anything they can do to help the economy. There should not be gender roles because everyone is unique, not based on their gender but on their abilities.
The roles placed on women today are much different than they used to be. It seems as if the roles of women are constantly changing in todays society. Women today have many more rights and opportunities compared to the women 50 years ago. Women can be apart of many prestigious positions in many different aspects of the world today. Woman today seem to be encouraged to get a good education and a good job to help support their family instead of being a "stay at home mom". As generations have gone by, there have been more and more rights for women and I believe that as generations come there will be even more rights for women. Personally I think that everyone should have equal rights no matter there gender, race, sexual preference, etc. There should not be roles in todays society based on gender but solely on peoples talents and abilities.
In todays society women have many more rights then we used to have and can also be apart of a higher status. Women used to be expected to stay at home with the kids, clean and always have dinner on the table for her husband when he gets home from work. I don't think its a bad thing to stay home and take care of your kids and do all the house work but i think we should have the say on if we want to do that or not. I believe there is still problems in our society like sexism but its not half as bad as it used to be. Now a days women are expected to have a decent job to help support their husband and kids. I do not think there should be gender roles based on gender, everyone is unique and has there own abilities and own say on how they want to live their lives.
Expectations that are are assigned by gender is different in our generation. Although there may be the few jokes about women being the cooks and cleaning while the men go out and do the hard work for the household, that does take place as much in our society. Roles have either switched in or have more equality which is how it should be. Women may work with their husbands whether it be a business that they run or the women work even more it just depends on the situation. Men will cook as well for the family its not always just the wives. Besides just this, women have the right to vote now as well which is a major step up from when that wouldn't even be considered an option. I think the fight for women's rights were very much accomplished and that in this generation women and men are considered equal and both take care of themselves instead of one gender having a role and the other having another.
The roles for women have changed over the past years. In the past, women were expected to stay home and do housework. Cleaning and cooking for their family was their only job. That was what was expected of them. The men went out and made the money for the family. Today women are able to go out and work and get a good paying job. They can get a good education so they are able to work. Women have been given a lot more rights than they were back then. Women now are becoming more successful but still are unable to be more successful than men. These roles are conveyed on TV shows and movies to show how women's roles have changed. I think women have been given a lot more rights which have made them so successful and has boosted the view of women. I believe a person no matter what they look like gender, race, or age should be able to do whatever they want.
The expectations for women today are to be skinny but have big breasts and a large posterior. These expectations have been put on women because of the media and celebrities. These celebrities go on stage wearing a leotard that emphasizes their large regions. Examples are Nicki Manaj, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian. Shirts are getting lower and pants are getting tighter. Instead of looking for personality, men now look for appearance in forms of sexual pleasure. Back in the day, men used to look for women who were pale and obese, because this symbolized wealth. Now men look for sexy instead of pretty and women today are struggling to fit the expectations. (women also look for sexy in males but this blog isn't about female expectations).
However, the change in expectations aren't all bad. For example, women are expected now to get a job and do their share as a working member in society. They are no longer expected to be stay at home mothers with duties such as cooking as cleaning. The stereotype is still taking place today, that the woman does the cooking and cleaning, but the stereotype is becoming less active now that women are seen as working members in society.
I think the decision that both genders are going to face is the choice between society's exceptions and your own. We could analyzing TV shows, commercials, magazines, and any other social mediums. But at the end of the day none of that is going to change, producers still make money, and actors and actresses still have fans. We are expected to constantly have our lives together, everything figured out. If we don't we are expected then to go on some miraculously journey by ourselves and meet all these people along the way and at the end of what the movies show as a week time span, you are supposed to know your life. But the reality is you choose your lifestyle, you aren't in control of anything else in this world besides yourself. Old-fashioned women say we have a standard to take care of our future husbands, clean house, and have kids. Adult women say we have an expectation to put yourself before everyone and everything. And teenage girls today think we are expected to look perfect but with little to no makeup, have the perfect social life, the perfect academic life, and have everything together constantly and make sure to post it all on social media so everyone knows that you got it together. None of that's true. You get to make your life, you get to choose every morning what you look like, what your motivation is and who you are. I would suppose that a lot of people forget that because of what we see on TV, social media, school, or listen to on the radio.
With the world of the past tending to be more, in a literal sense, a man's world, and with women only being allowed within the past 100 years to be in the workforce. So with a national and worldly history of oppressing the female sex, many of those who still act as if men are superior, are products of the conditioning of the mind by means of childhood bring up and their parents example, along with social roles and media usage. Now in the present time, the expectations and roles that were so clear in the past have became blurred. With some stating that women need to be independent and a stable life build for her by herself. This is conveyed in so many songs in todays music. A big example and supporter of this idea, in my opinion, would be people of the likes of Beyonce`, Lorde, Adele, Miley Cyrus, and Sia. But we also have people giving off the idea that women are to be "arm candy" and submissive to the will of men. An example of this would be Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke and with the music videos entire theme revolving around the fact that ditzy women need to be with a man and "tamed" and any denial to that fact is quickly abliterated, because not only in this are women less than the men, but they are degraded and used for sex appeal throughout the entire song and music video duration.
The double standards that are given today between men and women are everywhere. From forcing women to wear certain clothes such as always keeping shoulders covered, to a length of shorts, so it is not distracting the male students, whilst male students have little to no restrictions on clothing. To the fact that if a woman were to sleep around with a lot of men, she is labeled a slut, whore, easy, and is generally looked down upon. While if that was a man in that situation, no one bats an eye, because it is expected from men to act on their naturally sexual behaviors, and is considered to be normal, while women acting on a sexual disire, or in a sexual nature is shameful and bad, since many women are taught to be pure until marriage. While men are not shamed for the sexual endevores they act in, but they are praised, in a subconsious level.
My personal thoughts on the roles women should live up to are stupid and based on nothing but crap. People who create these expectations and roles, I feel are people who are threatened by the fact that they personally are not very good with what they are made to be, so in order to not be shown up by someone who is from the "weaker sex" they make restrictions for them so the people have no other choice but than the person who may not even be benefitual to the cause. This is one of my idea's since we can almost anywhere in history that when someone srewed up or is in danger of being shown up, the ones who are trying to fight the reformation of really anything, restrictions are placed on the group that will, without this restriction, succeed in becoming successful. This can be seen in history in several instances. From the actions of Hitler in the Holocaust, to instances and stories in ancient rome and greece. Personally, every human on this earth has potental to make something of themselves, and placing expectations and limitations on people because of the sex they where born in, is a low move and a cheap shot. This is because in order to be successful in anything, cooperation and skills are needed, and limiting the skills of people, is not only harmful to our success, but also the effiency of the human race as a whole.
The roles and expectations have evolved for women throughout the years; however, women are still viewed differently than men. I believe men still have a more superior power in the world, this is why sexism still exists. Sexism will always exist, as will racism and other stereotypes. I believe there will never be a world where there is no one person 100% stereotype free, unfortunately this is a sad truth with the world. Expectations have evolved for women throughout the years, so far back to when women were only allowed to wear dresses and skirts, no pants whatsoever. Women are now being taught in the medical field and are learning things other than reading and writing. Nurses, technicians, engineers, and almost every job out in the world, people will find women working within those jobs. Women generally get equal pay for most jobs; however, the glass ceiling still exists. Once a man has taken a higher position in the job, a woman with more experience who was not chosen because of one factor, her gender. Old expectations are still true in today’s world. Women are expected to be the parent to stay home and take care of the child. This is a natural thought in humans because the mother bares the child and feeds the baby. Unfortunately, women are judged if the father is the one staying at home. Mr. Yarwood told his story of when his first child was born, he was the one to stay home and take care of the baby. Since he was staying at home, he told that his wife was constantly getting a lot of hate and was being questioned as to why she was not the one home while the man of the house was working. When their second child came along, his wife stayed home so she did not have to deal with the same annoying problem. This is still a very stereotypical idea in today’s world. My thoughts on the new roles of women are good, I like the good things that have evolved throughout time. The bad things are still obvious, like stereotyping women and who people think women should be. It’s not right, but this problem may never go away. I believe it’s not that hard to look at someone based on their personality and abilities rather than their sex.
Looking back in history, we see women who were expected to take care of the house and children while the men went out and worked. Also women back then did not have as many rights as the men did. Now in this generation men and women are born equal and women have great rights such as to vote or be in the army. Men and women now share the rights and have the freedom to live the way they want to live. As expectations of women go now in this generation, many women are influenced by the media and celebrities seen on television or social media. These woman celebrities show normal women that that is how a "perfect female" should look and act like. So many women want to look like these celebrities or act in their footsteps because of their influence on society. Just like how back then Marilyn Monroe influenced women to look like her since all the men loved her. I think that todays expectations of women have become more equal with men but men nowadays can expect wrong things out of women. This is where we see domestic abuse happening or any other kind of emotional abuse. Besides all of the bad things, I believe that our generation is fair between both genders but its how we choose to live our lives that create our outcomes.
Throughout History the role of women have changed immensely. In today's society Women have equal rights and the opportunity to achieve anything they set their minds to. Although the roles of women have changed throughout time, some of the expectations still apply. Things like making food for a family or taking care of children on the daily basis. I don't think these roles will ever change because it is human nature. We often see these roles/expectations conveyed through things like social media. Television, movies, advertisements etc. Women today are no available to achieve higher status in things like business positions. Although women can achieve this and are capable of doing so.. it may veer the opinions of their male counterparts. I believe we should look at genders both male and female and look at the capabilities of each rather than the sex to which they are entitled to.
The roles of women have definitely changed from generation to generation. In generations in the past, women were responsible for all of the cooking and cleaning around the house and taking care of the children. Then the men would go out to work, and he would have to go and earn money to support and raise the family financially. When looking at today's society, women have been granted many more rights and are able to expand what they do. Now we see some of very successful people in the world who are women. There are many T.V shows today that show all of the different roles that a woman can have in her everyday life. I feel that today, women are for the most part equal with men in society. It is good seeing women being able to step up and prove themselves that they are just as capable of doing different things.
Women's roles have changed by a large amount in the past generations. In todays times, women are expected to get a job and earn money just like the husband. Unfortunately some people are stuck in the past and do not realize that women are equal to men. You can see these roles being put in to place during today by women taking roles in STEM fields that they usually never had before. I feel that these roles are good and people should respect that women are able to take on the same roles that men have for generations. Women are equal to men and it is for the better of society.
Women's roles have drastically changed. Just a few decades ago women were always expected to devote all their time and energy to working at the house and raising the kids. Women were not known to have major roles in their community and never had roles in the government. They were almost completely controlled by their husbands, and they had little rights. Now things have changed drastically. Women are very active in the community and the government. They can still stay at home with their kids but they are not expected too. They now have choices. They can be whatever they dream of. Women and men are as close to equal as they have ever been and it makes the world a better place.
In today's society the role of the average "woman" is something that has not been seen in past generations. The stereotype of the the cliche "housewife" has been broken. Today, woman are making more of an impact in everyday life than at any other point. Women are actively working, supporting, and giving to their family, as the male was coined to do, so many years ago. Roles are interchanging between men and women today. We all see stay-at-home dads, along with stay-at-home moms. Today we see women striving as CEO's and men as well. As of today's generation, we have progressed greatly in the attempt to bring men and women into one collective group.
Women's roles have changed throughout generations. Women have been looked upon as the weaker gender and were given roles that kept them close to home. They were expected to grow up and get married, have kids and take care of them. These roles have changed, maybe not entirely but that standard does not exist. Today, I think women have better options, they can become the 'breadwinners' of the family, they can choose to have a family, it's all a matter of choice. There are many women like Hilary Clinton who share active roles in male-dominated careers and I think this is a major change from earlier time periods. Women are now expected to go too college, get a job, then settle down. Women's roles might not have fully changed, but i believe there are more roles available for women at this day and age. Women are no longer confined to that sort of 20th century 'maid', and now are given so many more choices. Yes, there still needs to be improvement, in such areas as wage gaps, but I believe we are on the right track. People like Michelle Obama and Hilary Clinton send a positive message to women, whose roles are so diverse and immense. Women now have better choices on which roles they want to fulfill and which they do not, and I believe we are headed in the right direction.
The roles of women have increased in society. Compared to 50 years ago, women are expected to do a lot more. A common role for women is to graduate college, earn a degree, and get a job. This is much different from the past where women were expected to raise children and stay at home. This message is conveyed through commercials. The new black and white progressive commercial challenges the past expectations of women. I think the change is moving in the right direction, but it isn't there yet. Women are still not treated equally, and until that happens the roles and expectations of women will progress.
The roles of women have multiplied in society. Compared to 60 years ago women have different roles then they did back then. A common woman in our society today would attend college then graduate college and earn your degree then get a job. Compared to the past were they would learn to be a housewife and be a stay at home mother and basically do all the work in the house. Also the tv commercials were also varied. Now they are like womanly powered and motivating for women where to as back then they were sexist and gendered. To this day some people do not treat women right and still have sexist opinions about them. We have a slight turn on overall treatment but in the near future women's rights and their expectations can only go higher.
Today's women has progressed to near equality. The housewife becoming a thing of the past and moving over for the new modern woman with jobs and the capability to support herself and family. While there are some stipulations to the equality standard, women and man are more equal than ever and are very close to what could be called true equality. Comparatively the women of the past were oppressed and viewed as the lesser gender when in reality it just isn't true. I think that it is a very good thing that women have become equal it allows for our society to progress as a whole and unites the genders into one society. The progression of our society allows for more break throughs in science and cultural arts, as a whole it is a very positive turn for our society.
Women's roles have changed throughout the years. Women these days are making more of an impact than they did back in the day. They are achieving goals that people would never think they can achieve. Compared to women back in the day, they were "housewives". But at the same time other women don't even recognize or care that there own gender is succeeding in society. This will always be a problem with everyone. There are those "people, i won't say the word, who are completely oblivious and support things but have no idea what they are supporting. These "women" could honestly care less if Women are changing roles in society, let alone men. Yes, women have bigger roles in society but, the thing that is bringing them down is the "women" that don't recognize or care.
Today, women have as many opportunities as men do. They are now expected to step up and put the rights they have gained to use. Today, the average woman would attend a college and graduate, then start her career of choice. I see this idea being conveyed through the world we live in. This message is conveyed through commercials mostly. The commercials support that women are equal to men, and have the same capabilities as them. I believe that women are treated equal to men, and that there is no need for feminism. I believe that feminists are just women who think that women should rule over all.
I think that society is more expectant of women living up to their roles and supporting themselves. Though many television characters such as Claire Dunphy from Modern Family or Penny Sweetings from The Big Bang Theory are shown as the typical white American women, there are many efforts to combat that vision. Women are encouraged to join STEM-related classes, encouraged to ask questions and get involved in society. Women are expected a lot more now to support themselves and be self-sufficient, instead of relying on a man. That may have to do with women encouraging other women to support themselves, men wishing for women to become less relient on them, or just society evolving and people opening their eyes to the fact that women are just as capable as men. I think that this is very beneficial, and it shows that now we have a lot further to go than just women's rights.
Women today have a lot of the same roles as men. They are given equal opportunities and are expected to be able to support themselves. Women have come a long way and are no longer expected to be housewives and stay home to raise children. On television today we see strong, independent women, who have careers, like Meredith Grey for example. This has come a long way because back a long time ago they would never have shown women as doctors on tv. The women on tv were always housewives. I am glad to see that women have come such a long way over the years.
The roles of women have changed from being a stay at home mom to having the opportunity to be a CEO at a company. Equality is something that hasnt been attained, but has been nearly breached in America. In the presidential race, we currently have a woman running for president. We have females in the STEM field who have come up with breakthroughs in technology and science. My thoughts on the roles of women are positive. Since women have the opportunity to do the same as men, everyone can truly attain equality in our society. While it used to be women in dresses cooking dinner and watching the children, now it is women in pants-suits owning companies or running for president and not adhering to old societal norms. The rising equality is shown everywhere you look, and shows the progression of America.
Over the past few decades there has been a large shift in the the expectations put on women in the sense of gender roles. In the past it always was get married have kids become a house wife. However, now there is such a push for a change and equality that there is an expectation that a women has to be strong and independent and that she should not rely on anyone else, especially a man. In turn this new expectation has really created a sense of superiority in the minds of women over men. This overcompensation may be totally legitimate because since the beginning of time women have had less rights and been considered weaker, but it sort of turned feminism into a war of superiority not equality. This can be seen in movies and T.V. shows with the archetype of the strong female and the stupid boyfriend or other works that just depict women that live their lives independently for the purpose of showing strength. Overall in today's society there is a new expectation that is really an overcompensation for the old expectation of women's roles. Consequently, this expectation will not be fixed until women can stop believing that they are all goddesses that are superior to men.
Throughout history and time women's roles have always been slightly changing as each year passes. Back then women were not really expected to take jobs or ones in high position. They were more expected to be staying at home and having kids while keeping a good lifestyle, and married to men who were supposed to be doing the work. Today women have a variety of more opportunities. While it is defiantly not equal to men still in todays time, women are more successful and are achieving more than they have been in the past which is a good step forward. I can see these roles being shown in my own family by my mother. She came to this country when she had just turned 18 and put herself through schooling while also maintaining a job and still learning english, by coming here she had to sacrifice a lot in order to accomplish what she has but now she is a very successful women who helps runs and manages the branch in the company she works for. I think it is great for gender roles to be thrown out the window and allow equal opportunity for each gender in society and allow women to have the choice of if they want to be working and doing whatever job it is they want versus maintaining a home and having children, women have always placed themselves at the head of a task and continue to move through and take action. Lots of movements today fighting for women's rights have helped to create the path of present day and help to push for more change and opportunity as time goes on.
In the past women were mostly expected to be the ones who worked around the house, and take care of children, but throughout the 1900's and 2000's women have gained more and more rights and are accepted when trying to strive for a job such as a CEO of a company. In television and movies you see more and more women being very independent and being the star of shows, and this shows that the boundaries placed on women now are a lot less strict than they were before the 1900's. I think that it is good that women are able to get any job or position, because it lets there be a larger number of people to find the best person for a job.
I think the expectations of women today are much higher than what they were in the past. Women are expected to get an education, have a career, and be successful- what used to be the expectation for a man. However, the roles and expectations of women in the past still exist today along with the modern roles that used to belong to only men. Not only is a woman expected to be an educated, career driven person, but she is also expected to get married, have children, and take care of those children. Granted, the role of the man has also changed over time, making the burden of home life a little lighter for a woman, but I still think this puts an immense amount of pressure on women today nonetheless. It’s almost as if women’s roles have doubled rather than just have been changed. For example, the TV show The Middle is about a middle class family in Indiana. Frankie, the mother of the household, is often seen in shambles trying to take care of her children, get an education and a better job, and make ends meet. Her husband Mike is a minimal effort kind of man, leaving the bulk of the work at home to Frankie. It’s almost an unspoken expectation that she drive herself mad in order to keep everything in order. I think this makes it more important than ever for women to be sure that they are treated equally as men, and that men step up and do as much work as a woman does.
