Betrayal

Betrayal is a powerful word.  It is about disloyalty and about breaking trust.  We will see betrayal in Hamlet.  Think about why people betray others and what that says about the state of trust in a relationship.

In this week's blog, think about how one character is betrayed in Hamlet and what that causes. Then connect that betrayal to your world--pop culture wise.  Look at how betrayal is portrayed in film, television shows, books.  What is the result of betrayal and how do people in the pop culture pieces feel about the betrayal?

Hamlet's Father is betrayed when he is poisoned by his brother Claudius. Claudius then takes the throne of the king and marries the king's wife. This adds insult to injury. This betrayal is present in the movie The Lion King. Mufassa, the king lion, is killed by his brother in almost an identical circumstance as hamlet. Scar, the lion that killed Mufassa, took over the role as king. People were not happy with this pop culture example of betrayal. Still to this day Kids are haunted by the sight of Mufassa dying. It was truly a tragedy. The result is that the characters were all sad and it triggered the conflict of the entire story.

A character who is betrayed in Hamlet is Hamlet's father because after he dies, Hamlet's brother marries his mom. There is no bigger betrayal than having family turn on you. If one of my brothers did that to me, I'd never forgive them. As well as Hamlet, this is also present in the show Grey's Anatomy. One of the main characters, Callie Torres, was cheated on by her husband with one of her good friends. To me, cheating is by far the worst thing someone could ever do. It absolutely destroys people and everything that they are. In this world, betrayal is everywhere. You just have to find the right people to stick by.

In Hamlet, Hamlet's father dies and his brother marries his mother, who was the father's wife. That is an example of betrayal because I know if it were me and I had a sibling marrying my mother, I would never talk or look at them ever again. Betrayal is also shown in the television series The Walking Dead, when Rick and Darryl are out looking for supplies and food and they cross paths with a man named Jesus. Jesus steals the keys to the truck they're driving and steals the truck, left to walk on foot. Jesus played off like he was running from zombies and that he was going to continue running, but instead stole Rick and Darryl's truck. Trust is something that is not really found anymore. People now think lying and cheating is okay because it is so common. There are times where you think you can trust someone and they turn out the complete opposite. It makes me sick to my stomach!!

In Hamlet the king which is Hamlet's father is poisoned and betrayed by his brother claudius. In pop culture today there is many scenes of betrayal in movies, and television shows. In the tv show One Tree Hill it’s about a bunch of high school students who go through a ridiculously large amount of drama. Peyton and Brooke are best friends and one day Peyton finds out that Brooke ended up getting with her boyfriend Nathan leaving her feel betrayed and causing a whole lot of drama. These two connect with the betrayal leaving the characters upset and angry.

In Hamlet betrayal starts off the story. Claudius betrays King Hamlet by killing him and taking his fortune, his wife, and his position as King. In society today betrayal happens to everyone at some point in their life. Betrayal has become a very common and accepted thing in today's times. In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Anakin betrays everyone he knows by joining the dark side. In the movies he was suppose to be the chosen one who stops the dark side, but in the mist of getting stronger he learns that in the future he kills his wife Padmé. After learning this he learns who the Sith lord is and decides to learn the dark side to hopefully save her. Little to his knowledge him trying to save Padmé is what ultimately kills her.

Hamlets father is betrayed when he is poisoned by his own brother. Also, his brother goes on to marry his wife. MESSED UP. In Burn Notice, Michael who is the main character finds out that Simon, one of the people he was working with to try to find out who burned him, was working with the CIA. And to add more salt to the wound, Michael was actually working with the bad guys. The betrayals in Hamlet and Burn Notice are the same because even after finding out something or something happening to you, the person just makes it worse and adds more salt to the wound. Both of these events set up some major storylines within the show and the writing of Shakespeare.

In Hamlet, Hamlet's father is betrayed by his brother, Claudius. Claudius poisoned Hamlet's father and then married his wife. This brings tension between and Hamlet and his family because he does not understand why his uncle would do that and how his mother could remarry so fast. Betrayal is also shown in Grey's Anatomy. In Grey's Derek Shepard was married to his wife, Addison Montgomery. They we happily married, so it seemed, until Derek found Addison having an affair with Derek's best friend, Mark Sloan. Derek was speechless and could not believe they both would do that. They ended up going their separate ways, but trust is key in any relationship whether it is a friendship or boyfriend/girlfriend. Without trust, the relationship will not be successful. Betrayal is all around us and we just have to choose our friends/relationships carefully.

In Hamlet the king is betrayed by his brother. As the king was sleeping one day his brother dumped poison into his ear. This caused him to die. Hamlet's uncle did this most likely because he wanted to become king. He wanted the throne, power, and also the queen. I have seen betrayal in many different pop cultures, but one that sticks out to me is in the movie cyberbully. In the movie Taylor's best friend makes a fake account of some kid that Taylor begins to like. She tells him everything over an instant messaging site. When the friend becomes angry at Taylor she releases all of her secrets as the boy. She betrayed her friendship by posing to be somebody she wasn't and then using all of Taylor's personal information against her. Betrayal is everywhere. You have to be careful what you are telling people because they could quickly throw that back in your face.

A character who has been betrayed in Hamlet would be Hamlets dad. His own brother decided to poison him and marry his wife. This is betrayal.. but the fact that it is family makes it ten times worse. Throughout the rest of the book Hamlet is forced to live with the fact that his own father is a ghost who cannot make it to heaven because of his uncle. They were all family, but betrayal ruined it. In todays society we can see betrayal in TV shows, media etc. One example of this would be "The Walking Dead". Betrayal is a constant thing in this living and vibrant universe. The characters have no idea if they will turn on friends or family and the same is for the friends and family. It depends on the trust between the group.

Hamlets father, King Hamlet is betrayed by his brother, Claudius. Claudius poisoned King Hamlet then took his kingdom and his wife. Another form of betrayal in The Walking Dead when Shane leaves Rick in the hospital, assumes he is dead and has an affair with his wife and pretty much takes his place as a husband, father and leader. The result of these betrayals only leads to fighting and doubts on what exactly happened. Rick is hurt by this betrayal of his best friend and his wife but moves forward, unlike Hamlet after his fathers death and his uncles betrayal.

In the beginning of the novel King Hamlet was betrayed by his brother, Claudius when he poisoned king hamlet. Claudius did this so he could get his own benefit from taking what king hamlet had from him. Betrayal happens in relationships when the person betraying wants something other than what they are already receiving. A person who betrays another becomes un-trustworthy and disloyal. I think that as young adults in high school we see that a lot between friendships and relationships. Betraying someone is something that people should never do to another person. Not only will that person see you as disloyal and un-trustworthy but so will other people around you. An example of betrayal in pop-culture is in American Horror Story: Hotel (season 5), when Alex (wife of John) divorces him and leaves him to go live at the hotel. Another example from american horror story is in season 3 (coven), when Madison betrays Zoe by having an affair with her boyfriend. In this season Madison is seen as a disloyal person among the others. People usually feel very hurt after they have been betrayed leaving them angry or confrontational with the person who betrayed them.

In the beginning of the novel Hamlets dad was betrayed by his own brother Claudius. Claudius poisoned his own brother in his ear and no one knows who did it. Hamlet believes it was him but doesn't know for sure so he is going to act the scene of his fathers death to watch his reaction to prove if he is guilty or not. In the Matrix cypher a tech guy betrayed his own crew, he waited until his whole crew was trapped in the Matrix and unplugged them one at a time. He played his own crew to make them believe he was on their side but really the whole time he was against them. Betrayal happens a lot in society today in relationships and friendships. People cheat in relationship and can't be loyal to on another. Also in friendships people break promises and turn on each other and betray each other. Betrayal is something that should never have to happen because it is wrong in so many ways.

A character in Hamlet who is betrayed is Hamlet's father, he was murdered by his brother Claudius. It causes the entire kingdom to be shifted off balance because they just lost their king, while it also troubles Hamlet, his mother and the close soldiers around him. I think when people feel betrayed in society is when someone a person cares a lot about is caught lying or cheating. Society responds by talking on social media, the music we listen to, etc.

Their are a lot of instances where betrayal is a big part of a movie or something in pop culture. Hamlet was also betrayed because the ghost of his dead father was killed by his uncle which is now his father. A place in pop culture where this happend was when thor was betrayed by his brother because he wanted to rule the world in the avengers. These to instances are very similar because both characters where betrayed by someone in their family. These events showthe way people are trusted and not.

Betrayal is big in Hamlet. Hamlet feels betrayed by the ghosts of his dead father and uncle. This throws Hamlet off and he is upset and confused about why this is happening to him. Todays society sees examples of betrayal in movies and music. People today seem to enjoy songs about harsh break ups and people doing other people wrong. Taylor Swift is an example of making songs with the idea of betrayal. Nicholas Sparks movies also have sad endings that happened because of betrayal.

Betrayal is shown through many pop culture pieces today. Hamlet was betrayed by the ghost of his dead father who was killed by his uncle and is now his temporary father figure. Betrayal can be shown in society everyday and yet some people do not even see it. Betrayal can be defined as someone who is caught lying to another person or who is not being loyal to them. After recently watching the movie " The Matrix" in film lit, one of the characters " Cypher" show betrayal to his friends. Each of the character in the matrix are essentially plugged in, and he waited till they were all in the matrix and then he unplugged them so they could not come back. Most people today feel the the idea of betrayal is wrong and that it should not happen to one another.

Hamlet’s father is killed by his uncle, Claudius. This betrayal causes the ghost of Hamlet’s father to return and he calls for his son. Hamlet’s father was killed by poison being put it in his ear, so it would appear that he died from natural causes. King Claudius did this to try and overtake the throne over Hamlet. This betrayal in Hamlet relates to the movie Snow White. The Evil Queen takes care of Snow White for her entire life, but then the Evil Queen betrays her. She disguises herself and attempts to give Snow White a poisoned apple so she can remain the queen. Claudius and the Evil Queen both betray their family to gain and keep power. This betrayal leads to the Evil Queen’s death in Snow White, it could be foreshadowing something that may happen to Claudius later on in the story. Betrayal is looked upon as evil and people see it as a sinful act. Betrayal is negative and the person who betrays the good character in the story, they will always deserve something bad to happen to them according to the way society looks at betrayal.

Hamlet's father is betrayed by his brother, Claudius, who kills him. Due to this betrayal, a set of events happen. The late King's ghost appears and tells Hamlet of the betrayal of Claudius, giving Hamlet fuel to his anger towards his uncle and mother. In modern times betrayal is seen through several types of media, and throughout history like the betrayal between Mussolini and Hitler in WW2. But one media relates strongly to the same betrayal Hamlet faces, The Lion King. In The Lion King, Scar betrays his brother Mufasa to become the king, he pushes Mufasa off a ledge into stampeding Wildebeests, killing him. Simba faces the betrayal of his uncle, many years later he sees an apparition of his father and decides to confront Scar and take his rightful place as King. Betrayal is looked down by society as a evil act and the people who commit these deeds are often defeated by the good character in the story. From Shakespeare's Hamlet and The Lion King, betrayal has been looked upon as an evil act for ages.

One character I see betrayed, besides Hamlet's father, is Hamlet himself. When Queen Gertrude marries Claudius less than two months after her husband dies, she betrays Hamlet by making him question her motive for marrying him in the first place. He feels confused and ashamed, upset at his mother for remarrying so quickly, while she just tells him to 'get over it' and 'stop mourning'. Betrayal is seen in the Kim Possible episode 'So The Drama". Kim is fighting her nemesis Dr. Drakken, and to distract her from his plans, he creates a synthetic drone named 'Synthodrone 901', also called Eric. Eric attends Kim's school, and they hit it off instantly. Kim genuinely likes Eric, and this is huge for her, as she had never had a steady boyfriend before. However, at the junior prom, Kim's friend's pet rat bites a hole in Eric shoe after he offends him, and the synthetic goo starts pouring out of him and he breaks down. In this instance, Kim is betrayed because she thought she would actually have a relationship while fighting crime, and it turns out he was just another experiment by Drakken. the result of betrayel is typically a lot of hurt and anger. Some of the time, betrayal is done by someone who already has a negative relationship with the person they are betraying, so their negative feelings only heighten. But in those instances where someone who is very close to the other betrays them, it is hard to earn the trust back. Once the betrayer does prove their loyalty and trust is honest, though, the two become close again. There is always that negative aura, but it is typically overshadowed soon enough.

Betrayal is shown in Hamlet when Hamlet's friends were told by the King and Queen to figure out why Hamlet is acting the way he is and report back to the King and Queen, instead of caring about Hamlet and asking what is wrong out of the goodness oft their hearts. This is shown in pop culture EVERYWHERE where one friend does something that his/her friend does not like and conflict arises. This is seen in Hannah Montana, Season One, Episode One, where Miley doesn't tell Lily, her best friend, that Miley is Hannah Montana. Lily feels betrayed because she thought she was Miley's best friend and best friends tell everything to each other. Miley ends up feeling absolutely awful about not telling Lily and apologizes day after day until she makes it up and they stay friends for four more seasons. Betrayal is usually a solvable issue in pop culture but in the real world, not so much.

One character that I saw betrayed was hamlets father. When he died His wife Gertrude marries his brother Claudius less than a couple months after his death. In pop culture their are a lot of things that show betrayal or are the act in itself. For example in the matrix the characters re in the matrix and the one character cypher unplugged the cord, therefore they could not come back. People today do not like the emotion or the feeling of being betrayed ,also they think it is not right to betray your friends and should not happen to anybody.

In the book Hamlet one of the characters that get betrayed is Hamlets father who is killed by his brother which is Hamlets uncle who ends up marrying his mom only within two months of his fathers death. This betrayal caused Hamlet to seek revenge. In the movie mean girls Cady betrays Regina George by pretending to be her friend and causing terrible things to happen to her and at one point in the movie Cady had no friends at all because Regina got back at her. She learned her lesson and tried to fix things. Betrayal is something that sadly happens often to people. Some can be betrayed by getting cheated on by a boyfriend/girlfriend and others can be betrayed by a friend they thought they could trust and as a result of betrayal relationships are broken and some feel lonely and worthless.

A character betrayed in Hamlet is Hamlet's father. He was betrayed by his brother, Claudius because he wanted to be King. Brothers should always look out for each other, yet Claudius killed his own brother. This causes turmoil within the people who are aware; Hamlet being the one struck with the information initially. In pop culture, betrayal is shown in almost every show, movie, or novel one can think of. For example, in the book eclipse by stephanie meyer within the twilight saga, victoria betrays her "boyfriend" because she uses him in order to get back at Edward for killing her previous boyfriend. She allows him to be killed and doesn't care because she turns out to be using him the whole time, not actually caring about him. The boy felt upset and in dismay over her betrayal, but others thought it to be typical of her and were not surprised. In general, nobody likes to be betrayed and those who do the betraying are looked down upon socially and within the pop culture pieces in which they reside.

King Hamlet is betrayed in the play Hamlet. Hamlet is betrayed by his brother Claudius. Claudius kills his brother (King Hamlet), and then proceeds to marry his wife. Family members are the last people we expect this betrayal from. Since it was family, it makes the act of betrayal much worse. This betrayal causes King Hamlet to become a ghost in order to finish his business on earth. Another example of betrayal is in the show Breaking Bad. Walter betrays Jesse by killing his girlfriend. Walter allows Jane to die by suffocation after she took drugs. This causes Jesse to become depressed and drives a stake between Walter and Jesse. Walter feels remorse immediately following the act; however, after he has time to process what has happened, he returns to his badass self and does not feel sorry for killing Jane.

The King was betrayed by his brother Claudius because he wanted to become king. It is said that he killed his brother. He also married the King's wife after his death. What that betrayal causes is tension in the family. Hamlet is more distant and and "changes". In pop culture, betrayal is shown in almost all television shows, movies, books, and songs. For example, in the movie "Mean Girls", the main character Katie, betrays her best friends just to be seen as a popular girl. The result of this betrayal was Katie losing her best friends, Damian and Janice. They felt like they now weren't good enough to be friends with Katie. Katie was alone and didn't have any friends as a result of her actions.

One character in Hamlet that was betrayed was Hamlet’s father. His brother Claudius killed him because he wanted to be the king. Claudius poisoned Hamlet’s father so they wouldn’t know who did it, and he took the kingdom and King Hamlet’s wife. In the show Friend’s, Ross was getting married to Emily, and he said Rachel’s name at the altar instead of Emily’s. This led Emily to believe that Ross betrayed her and was still in love with Rachel. Emily was unable to forgive Ross because she felt she couldn’t trust them, and their marriage ended very quickly. Betrayal happens all of the time especially within marriages/relationships.

Ophelia has been betrayed by her brother and father as they do not have her best interests at heart and instead act out of self preservation. This causes Ophelia to suffer as she is prevented from being with the man she loves. In pop-culture we see the same sort of betrayal in the tv show Teen Wolf in which the characters Scott McCall and Allison Argent want to be together but her father forbids it as Scott is a werewolf and the Argents are hunters. Allison and Scott should be sworn enemies but she chooses to ignore her family's strife and be with Scott anyway.

A character in Hamlet that has been betrayed is Hamlet's father by his mother. After He died, Hamlet's mother did not mourn for very long until she married her husband's brother. In pop culture, betrayal is shown everywhere. One example of this is in Grey's Anatomy, when Derek is cheated on by his first wife with his best friend. He is betrayed by both of them and loses trust for them both as a result. Betrayal is the worst thing you can do to someone that trusts and loves you.

Hamlet's father has been betrayed by his brother, Claudius. Claudius had poured poison into the current kings ear so he would die and Claudius would become the new king. This can be seen like when Walter White sells out Jessie to the DEA. This shows that betrayal is a common thing in a lot of pop culture references and is even dated back to Shakespearean plays. The result of betrayal is one side usually getting in trouble for something or hurt by what happened as a result of the betrayal.

Hamlets father is betrayed for his own brother. After hamlets father dies, his brother marries his wife. His family turns on him and thats the biggest betrayal. Hamlets father will never understand why his brother would do that or why his ex wife will remarry so fast. I have seen betrayal in many tv shows and movies, but one that really sticks out to me is in 90210. In 90210 many of the girls are mean to each other and start off as best friends and then hate each other and date each others boyfriends. Betrayal is everywhere and you always have to watch for what you're telling people because you never know when they will go behind your back. You have to chose your friends/relationships carefully.

In Hamlet, King Hamlet is betrayed by his brother. Claudius kills King Hamlet by poisoning him in his ear so no one would find out and King Hamlet couldn't confess his sins before he died. In pop culture today, betrayal is a heavily popular thing. In the show Gossip Girl, one of the main theme through out all of the seasons is betrayal. Through out the series you see Blair and Serena constantly going back and forth with one another, although they claim to be "best friends". It all started when Serena went behind Blair's back, hooked up with Blair's boyfriend, and instead of owning up to it, Serena left without telling anyone the reasons why, which caused a lot of tension between her, Blair, and all of the other characters. Betrayal is common in today's pop culture, and it's used as almost a fish hook to get the attention of others.
