The music that we love

Music speaks to us in ways we cannot begin to explain.  It is not just about the lyrics, the artist, the notes written together to form a sound.  It is a conversation that takes place between the music and the soul.  It is the moment when you listen to a song and that song resonates with you like none other.

We play the song over and over memorizing the chills that run up and down our spine, recalling the way we are transported to another world, internalizing the way we become consumed by a the music--wrapped in it knowing for the three to four minutes it plays we are held prisoner.  This is music.

My description my not be accurate for all of us.  I can only speak to the way music possesses me.  There are many songs that have become part of my DNA.  Many of them songs that others have not heard of or thought about.  One such song comes from the musical Les Miserables.   (Click Les Mis) Listen to the song.  It is not important to me that you like or respond to it the way I do.  What is important is that you think about your own song.

After you listen, respond by commenting on a song that is equally as important to you.  Explain why you like the song and why it is significant.  Is it the lyrics, the music, the moment when you heard it?  Sometimes the time and place we hear a song drives the song deeper into our emotion.  The last question you must answer is whether or not your song has "Musical merit."  Is your song respected in the music world?  Why or why not?  (The song I picked is part of a musical which is thought by many to be one of the greatest musicals written.  It has been performed by many and been around for over 25years.)

Happy blogging!!!!

A song that is really important to me is the song Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw. This is a really catchy song with an important message attached to it. The lyrics are very powerful and this song reminds me of how amazing it is that my mom and sister both survived cancer. This experience made me realize to not worry about the little things and to not be afraid to go for your dreams and goals in life. Do not take life for granted. I would say this song is respected by everyone because most people know people who have been through cancer or they might have gone through it themselves so this song really speaks to everyone.

The song that is equal to One More Day from Les Mis for me is "When You Believe" from the animated movie The
Prince of Eqypt (not the Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston version). This song is absolutely beautiful. It is
about faith and believing. This song is significant because we sing it before performing on show nights in Brunswick
High School Theatre. Putting on a show takes the whole group working together and singing this before each show just allows us to see how far we've come. It is a moment of unity that makes me realize what amazing people I have met and get to work with.

I first heard this song when I watched The Prince of Egypt as a child. So it also takes me back to that time. As for "Musical Merit", I can't really say if it has it because I don't think many people know about it enough to make it have "Musical Merit." In my eyes it does because the music is beautiful and it has a positive message.

A song i can relate to is "I Go Back" by Kenny Chesney. This is a well written powerful song that can relate to many different people and age groups. The song is about when you hear another song that takes you back to moments in your life. It's a a lot more relatable to the older generation like our parents because in the first line he talks about "Jack and Diane" which was a popular song from the 80's. He also says "only the good die young, stops me in my tracks" which he relates to the song, "Only the Good Die Young" by Billy Joel. We can all relate to that line in the song because all of us have lost someone in our lives too soon and it does stop us in our tracks. The song has a great meaning, good lyrics, and a catchy beat. I can listen to it over and over without getting sick of it. It will forever be one of my favorite songs.

A song that I listen too when im upset of anything is beautiful by Eminem. This songs is about never letting someone say that you cant do something or let them bring you down. The songs lyrics are motivating and make you forget about what other people say about you. Also the song can be a great booster to make you work that much harder at your goal.

A song that is important to me as of late is "When can I see you again" by Owl City. Though not said directly, its basically that life is a journey, we all have our own place in it, and we are all going somewhere, no matter our ambitions. However, don't rush off to your goal, for what happens along the way is what makes it count. As far as I can tell, it is generally liked by the music community. I enjoy it personally not only because of the message it sends, but because of the depth in its wording, not necessarily the meaning, but how it is portrayed, sort of like how a deep bass sound puts a powerful vibration or thrum in the song, while its not noticed directly, it gives this "thud" that is beautiful when mixed in with the other musical instruments and elements of the song, but cannot hold on its own.

A song that has always gave me that feeling, and sent shivers down my back is Paradise by Coldplay. I don't know what is was the first time I heard it but I gravitated to the song. After the accident in June the song grew to be even more meaningful. It happened to be Lexi's favorite song, and when they played it for her at a candle lighting ceremony I felt the biggest chills. It is hard to listen to now because of that but I think the song has a lot of meaning for Brunswick students. I don't believe it has musical merit because it's not known to alot of people, and does not relate to everyone.

The song that I have chosen to listen to was Not Afraid by Eminem. I have always loved Eminem from the first time I've heard him rap, but for some reason this song has had a lot of meaing behind it. A lot of his past songs have mostly been about drugs, but this song isnt about just his journey to recovery, it's saying to everyone that you can over come anything. My favorite part of this song is "I shoot for the moon but I'm to busy gazing at stars". To me this means that you might have an ultimate goal but there are always going to be things that try to stop you. The song lyrics make me feel like no matter what happens in life you can always over come it.

A song that I can relate to is “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” by Gary Allan. The song talks about struggles and how you can overcome them to have a bright future. This song can relate to many different people and age groups because of the message it portrays. I listen to this song when I am in a bad mood because it helps me realize there is no need to stress over the little things in life. There is an end to every struggle, you just need the power to push through it. I believe the song has musical merit because its number 11 in iTunes top 100 country songs and it conveys a positive message.

A song that resonates deeply with me os "Crossroads" be Avenged Sevenfold. Essentially, this song is about having to choose between two paths, one that is right, and one that is fun or easy. This song is important to me because i've been listening to this song for a good four years now, and none of its meaning has been lost to me. It has a message that everyone can relate to. Each of us has our own choices to make, some easier than others. As for musical merit, i would say yes it does because of its message, but i;m only one person and its merit is not for me alone to decide.

The song I chose is called Undertow by Genesis. This song is inspirational to me in ways I can of describe. The lyrics, melody, rhythm, chords, the whole lot of it. Probably on of my most favorite sections is the chorus wher the lyrics are, "Stand up to the blow, that fate has struck upon you. Make the most of all, you still have coming to you." and, "Let me live again. Let life come find me wanting. Spring must strike again, against the shield of winter." These lyrics are powerful to me because the open up windows to me to help me see the world in different ways. I like that because I like to remain optimistic about life, and this song provides an almost battle-like comparison to life itself.

The song I chose was “Imagine” by John Lennon. The song talks about no more need for violence or worry in the world. It shows the possibility of a Utopian society. This shows gives hope to an unworried world, with no overthinking anything. Although the ideas are radical and unrealistic sometimes, it allows you to clear your mind while listening, and just relax. John Lennon was highly respected for his musical talents, and for his unique beliefs and confidence in them.

A song that really touches my heart is Martina McBride's "Love You Through It". This song describes a woman's fight against cancer and how her husband loves her through the fight. I am luckily not personally affected by cancer, but the way she describes the struggle and the fight really touches my heart. I could never imagine going through something like that and this song helps me understand the hardships that people go through.

A song that's important to me is Build Upon the Sand by Stick to Your Guns. Stick to Your Guns is a band whose lyrical content is centered around hope and overcoming struggle, and this particular song encompasses their message best. The repeated lyric "I understand you" is powerful and takes me back to when I saw them live their vocalist gave a speech that really inspired me about staying positive and that no matter how tough times might be, other people share your struggles and you are never alone. The song has merit within its genre and Stick to Your Guns has headlined a lot of tours and is a relevant name in the punk/hardcore community, but it's not something that'd be played on the radio. They're some of the nicest, most personable guys I've met though so in my eyes they're better than any celebrity artist.

A song that really speaks to me is (sorry about the profane name) Holy Horses**t, Batman by Gym Class Heroes. I can relate to every lyrics in this song. The name of the song may be a little off but that is kinda the way I am. I would not say I have a traditional way of thinking. This song asks what happens when you die? and what should I believe in. This is why I can relate so well. I do not know what to believe in, so i just don't. I try living my life as positively as possible and without worry. And that is what the artist in this song says as well. I would say Gym Class Heroes are somewhat respected because they have a large fan base and have released several albums. Their lyrics are very easy to relate to also which I believe gives even more musical merit.

If I had to choose a song that was important to me, it would have to be Beautiful by Eminem. When I was growing up Eminem is all I ever listened to. I felt as if I could relate to all of his heart aches and struggles that he had to overcome in his life. But, the reason I chose the song Beautiful is because I feel the most relatable to this song. I say this because of some of the lyrics in this song. They honestly just speak to me. Everytime I am upset or down for some reason, I will turn on this song and just think. So many emotions and thoughts run through my mind everytime I listen to this song. Eminem basically discusses the struggles for anyone. Anyone could relate to this song. He talks about how everyone is beautiful in their own way and that there is hope for each and every one of us in life. He talks about feeling one another's pain and struggles. He also discusses the aspect of being your own person. That you should not change for anyone and stay true to yourself. He claims that everyone is beautiful in their own way... which is ultimately true.

A song that is important to me is the song "one step at a time" by four year strong. I like this song a lot for many reasons not only is it a good sound but the lyrics are inspirational. The song sends the message to the listener to take life one step at a time and not worry about stuff and that no matter how bad it gets to keep moving on. The time I heard it was when I was having a bad day and it helped me to know that I can get through the time. This song has musical merit and is accepted in the music community. It is only a few years old it may not be the greatest to everyone but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I would have to say a song that is important to me is "It's Time" by Imagion Dragons. I picked this song because I can really relate to the lyrics. This song is about never changing who you are because it will make you bigger than the rest, it also is about beginning a new journey in life or starting over because in the long run, it will help you become a stronger person. I find this song very inspirational because everyone needs a new beginning or a new experience to make them a better person and to enjoy life even more.

A song that is important to me is "Good Riddance" by Green Day. I've listened to it countless times and always find the lyrics to be relate-able.The lyrics are all about facing a turning point in life and making the best of it, stating "It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right...I hope you had the time of your life." Whenever I face a dramatic change I always try to make the best of it, no matter how unexpected it may have been.

A song that hits me the hardest is Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain) by Gary Allan. This song is important to me because this year has been the most stressful year of my short life. My best friends passed away, my grades are declining, I am stressed with my future that I have no control over, and I am watching my grandmother whom I take care of, die more and more every day. I cry every time I hear this song. It gives me the strength to move on and keep my head up. A few lyrics are, "I know you're feeling like you just can't win, but you're trying. It's hard to keep on keepin' on, when you're being pushed around, Don't even know which way is up, just keep spinning down, 'round, down… Every storm runs, runs out of rain, Just like every dark night turns into day. Every heartache will fade away, Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain"
No other song has ever meant more to me. Gary Allan is an extremely well renowned artist of country music and has won many awards including gold- certified albums, platinum records, and top chart hits. I believe this song is very deserving of music merit not only because it is written by one of the best artists in country music, it can have such a strong effect on a person that it continually moves me to tears.

The song I chose that is equally important to me is “Uncharted” by Sara Bareilles. I like this song because while it’s upbeat and lighthearted it still has meaning, and whether I am in a good or bad mood I can listen to it on repeat. There’s a part in one of the final choruses where she starts with a growl and I’m so envious of her stylistic abilities. The song is about taking chances. She’s saying don’t just sit and wait for change and adventure, but do something about it. “Compare, Where you are to where you wanna be and you’ll get nowhere” is my favorite line because you can’t be disappointed when things aren’t going your way. You have to work to get things done, and when that doesn’t work, you just have to work harder. I think for her genre she has Musical merit, but I don’t think she is renown enough to be an artist of Musical merit.

The song that I chose as the song that is equally important to me is "The Way That You Are" by the Classic Crime. I like this song because of the message it sends of being yourself and not listening to what other people say about you. You cannot listen to what people say about you and want from you and make yourself what they want. I spent many years of my own life doing this and always coming up short and liking myself less and less all the time. The more I tried to conform, the less and less I was myself. At the end of my freshman year, I was completely upset with myself; i didn't even like my friends let alone myself. The lyrics, "And I hope to God that he will find his name and not listen to his so called friends when they so boldly say: "This is the way, that you are," Don't let them say "This is the way, that you are," really struck a chord with me because for a long time, I lived my life letting people decide who I was and not being myself. pretty much, this is exactly who I was. I wouldn't say that this is a band of Musical merit just because of the fact that they are a very young group and not overly popular. most people have no idea who they are at all. the things they sing out about though, their lyrics, are deep. they don't sing shallow love songs. They get to the nitty gritty and the stuff no one else wants to sing about. they talk on issues and pains. their honest and genuine lyrics are the reason I love them.

The most important song that has ever resonated my heart like no other one would have to be “War Requiem” by Edward Benjamin Britten. The song is an opera that lasts for over an hour and is sung with English lyrics. The opera preaches about how war is a negative thing and that soldiers simply go to die for no noble cause. The song received much musical merit from composers such as Tchaikovsky during its time. Some critics like Stravinsky, however, said that the piece would ruin nationalism for Britain. Despite Stravinsky’s criticism, he followed a lot of Britten’s work, including “War Requiem”. Even though I’m sure that most people have never heard of Benjamin Britten, let alone heard of “War Requiem”, I believe that it deserves musical merit because it won him the Robert O. Anderson Aspen Award in the Humanities and won the French government's Ravel Prize and was knighted as Baron Britten for this. Out of all the prizes Britten received, the one that gave “War Requiem” the greatest musical merit was having Britten become a Companion of Honor in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.

While I enjoy most types of music, I find that movie scores tend to move me the most. Yes, there are other types of songs that I deeply enjoy, but the music of the movies is what I connect to the best. As a result, the song “Time”, composed by Hans Zimmer on the Inception movie soundtrack, moves me just as the given song moves Mrs. Perrin. Seeing as there are no lyrics, it is the music and pacing that are the most important. The song beings softly, and builds for four minutes. First the piano…the strings…the drums…all capped by a deeply moving low brass section. And then, just at climax, the song suddenly falls silent. I enjoy this song because it sucks me in. You have to listen closely in the first minute, and because of this, the sound envelops you. As the song builds and grows louder, so, too, emotions grow. The climax of the song feels prideful and powerful. The drop off at the end leaves me with a sense of peace. “Time” mixes so many emotions that I am surprised if I don’t get shivers.
As per the question of Musical Merit, I believe that this song carries weight. Hans Zimmer is, in my opinion and in the eyes of many others, one of the greatest movie soundtrack composers of his time. Because this song is composed by him, it is afforded a large degree of merit.
A final note on the song, it can never be played too loud. The louder it is, the more powerfully it speaks. And, when played in the car on the highway, it feels like flying.

I like a lot of country music. My favorite song right now would have to be by Little Big Town and its called Pontoon. It is really just a fun little song that doesn't mean anything. Its just about people on a boat. It recently won single of the year award at the CMA's. As far as musical merit goes, I would say that yes it has musical merit, because it was good enough to win song of the year and is a really fun song that makes me and my manager sing everytime it comes on at work. Its so addicting and you have to listen to it over and over. A.MacIvor

A song that has a important meaning to me would be Perfect by P!nk. This song means a lot to me because it has helped me when I was going through a hard time in my life. The lyrics are a message that I think everyone wants to be told. When I was going through the hard time in my life I felt like I had no one, this song is what kept me together. It reminded me that it doesn't matter what others think about me I'm who I am and I'm the perfect version of myself. The lyrics in this song give you the strength to keep going and helps you realize that you don't need to listen to the comments others say about you. I think anyone who is going through a hard time should listen to this song because it speaks to everyone.

No one would guess that I am a fan of hard rock and metal genre of music, but i am. One of the songs that most speaks to me is Monster by Skillet. Whenever I am upset or in a bad mood I listen to this song and with its fast harsh beat and perfect words that seem to speak to me. After the song is over I feel myself calm down and my heart rate slow. This song is probably not considered to have musical merit because it is by a Christan band that few people have heard of and is from a genre of music that is not accepted in today's pop culture. However even so it is one of my favorite songs.

A song that's important to me is "The Cave" by Mumford and Sons. I think it is a powerful song, with powerful lyrics. To me, it deals with the idea of moving on from past mistakes and bad experiences, and moving forward with your life. While sometimes that isn't easy, it often leads to better things. I was able to relate to this song (and still am able to), and for that reason, it is important to me. I really do believe this song has Musical Merit. It's lyrics are well thought out, and the message it sends is a good one. If that doesn't indicate merit, then I don't know what does!

The song "Three little Birds" By Bob Marley is a song that is very important to me. My uncle, who has cancer, first showed me the song. We sang the song together when he was first diagnosed. Everytime I hear this song it makes me think of my Uncle. I know each day is a struggle for him but I pray for him. I like this song because it makes me think of being with my Uncle. "You Belong Here" by Anberlin packs a lot of nostalgic punch for me. I originally heard the song off of the CD that I had borrowed from my friend in Detroit. The initial listening memory I have of this song was during the last few months of when I lived in Detroit. After returning the CD I debated with myself the ethics of listening to the ripped version on my iPod being that I did not purchase the album but only borrowed it. This led me to set it aside for a while but I picked it up again last fall. The lyrics intrigued me with the idea of "a heart that's not worth breaking isn't worth much" and the introduction's hypnotically soft piano, glass harmonica, and echoing voice. I liked the song and album so much that I bought it on vinyl so I could play it on my record player. The ethical dilemma thus solved, I listened to it a great deal more and paralleled the lyrics to my own situation that had been occurring at the time. The topics covered in the album fit so nicely that I hardly listened to much of anything else. I have branched out since then but I still enjoy going back to "You Belong Here" for a good trip.

The song i chose is Ill mind of Hopsin 5. I like the song because his flow is crazy good and he adresses some of the largest problems that are effecting my generation. The lyrics are the biggest part of the song because they are all very unique and flow, but they still give a very clear message. He really wants kids to see the error of their ways and its inspiring. I do believe the song has musical merit, but other people do not because he is not the most popular artist because he refuses to sign with the major record labels. He wants to keep his music real and truly enjoys rapping and is not in it for the money.

The song I chose is Disenchanted by My Chemical Romance. They have been my favorite band for a long time, but this song is one I can relate to more than others. The band says it's a song about dreams, but to me it is also growing up and realizing these dreams aren't turning out the way you imagined they would. If you we're to ask me where I would be at 17 when I was starting high school, it would be far from where my life is really at. It is also important because it is the first MCR song I learned on the cello. It's easy, but it was a huge accomplishment at the time.

The song that is important to me is "Lay me Down" by Chris Tomlin. I love this song because it is very upbeat, and also because it has an important message to it. The song speaks of giving up one's selfish wants and needs. Between the lyrics and the beat of the music, this song can get me in a good mood any time of the day. I know it is not a well known song at all, so it may not have any musical merit, but even still, it will remain as one of my favorite songs.

A song that is very important to me is Bully by Shinedown. This song is significant to me not only because the lyrics speak to me, but because the beat and emotion thrown into this song is absolutely killer! My sister introduced me to this song a while back when I hit a rough patch in my life. All she had to say was: listen. That was the time I realized how much this song related to my life. "It's 8am, this hell I'm in, it seems I've crossed the line again for being nothing more than who I am. All you'll ever be is the painful memory of a bully, make another joke while they hang another rope, so lonely. Let's right the wrong." These few lyrics are saying people are being judged for merely being who they are and committing suicide for being bullied. Also "let's right the wrong" is simply saying let's change the wrong and make it right. I think this song does have merit. Not because it's popular, but because the message speaks loudly.

One song that really means a lot to me is the country song "Springsteen" by Eric Church. This was the anthem of my past summer (and last summer) spent in Florida because the lyrics say "When you think about me, do you think about 17? Think about my old Jeep?". Being 17 and having a Jeep of my own, I can relate to this a lot. On top of all that, my favorite artist is Bruce Springsteen and I was always playing his music while I was driving. I feel like this song was meant for me and I played it all summer long. This song will always bring back memories to me of my last summer in Florida.

A song I enjoy is Time by Pink Floyd. The song is basically about how as humans we waste time and wish it would go by faster but then once you reach a certain point, you look back and realize how quickly it ended up going by. This message is really powerful, but a little scary to think how someday we will all be old and looking back on all the time we wasted and wishing we would have done more. I think the song definitely has musical merit. It's a really popular song by Pink Floyd and they are regarded as one of the greatest rock bands by critics and fans alike.

A song that is important to me is Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. My dad used to listen to this song all the time when I was younger, and I would always know the words and sing along with him. Whenever I hear it I think of that connection I have with him by songs like this. It has musical merit because it talks about wanting to be noticed but not being judged by the people around, which most people can relate to.

The song "Up and Up" by Reliant K is song in which the lyrics describe what I feel I need to be. Well, that's not necessarily what I mean to say I think, but the lyrics say it better:
Yesterday
Is not quite what it could've been
As were most of all the days before
But I swear today
With every breath I'm breathing in
I'll be trying to make it so much more.
And that's just the first verse. So maybe a better way to say it is that the lyrics have put into words exactly what I have been doing my whole life or at least my high school career, and that would be always aiming higher, "to be content with where I am / and getting where I need to be." The artist is fairly well-known, probably more so by people who like alternative, but the song is not one of their more famous songs. So no, the song doesn't have musical merit the way "One Day More" has.

The song I chose was "waiting on the world to change" by John Mayer. This song is about needing to change the world and bringing our troops home. The government has the power to bring them home but they won't. If the people had the power they would be home. The news isn't telling us the important things that are going on in the world. I like this song because when I'm sad it makes me feel better.

One song that has changed my life is "I Was Here" by Beyonce. This is a song, not about any one thing, but about doing things for the benefit of others, whenever you can. This song was performed on World Humanitarian Day at the UN Headquarters this past year (August 19, 2012). I like this song, not because of the sound or the harmonies, but the message it sends to it's listeners. It even shows how one nice thing, no matter how big or small, can change the world. I do this everyday, as when I get the chance, I go out of my way to do something nice for another.

P.S. Les Miserables is my favorite Musical, too.

A song that is important to me is the song Happiness by the fray. The song is significant to me because, one it is a good song asnd second, but more importantly it shows how happiness is something that comes and goes. The song just speaks to me and show happiness will come but sometime it will not be there and you have to jsut let it go and it will come. Happines is something that is true and when true happiness come you will no it and it will be something special. You just have to wait for it. This song means something to me because the lyrics are good and make me thing of happiness and when true happiness comes it is great. You just need to wait for it
