Social Changes

We were introduced to the idea of Social change by Giovanni in the Life Changes piece we read last week. Social Change could be the Civil Rights movement, or other ways that change has come through while watching society grow and evolve. I want you to think about a time in your history that has impacted you.

For me, the explosion of the Spaceship Challenger, Desert Storm, and Oklahoma Bombings have all impacted the way I see the world. Now, there have been many more events that have impacted me, but these happened when I was in school or just outside of high school. My mother has said on many occasions that she will never forget where she was when she heard that JFK was shot.

Desert Storm was a tumultuous time for my family. My father was endanger of being activated and sent to fight. I was a senior in high school and the world was supposed to be a place filled with possibility, not war. My dad made T-shirts in the basement that said, "These colors don't run" underneath an American Flag. My school choir sang "Proud To Be an American" at the Spring concert and on April 12th, 1991 I joined The Army National Guard. Patriotism flowed through my family and school.

Think about a moment in your history that has impacted you. Where were you? Who were you with? How were you impacted? What changed in you at the moment?

A moment in history that has impacted me was 911. When it happened I was at school with my classmates. The way it has impacted me was that now we all have to work together to keep the country safe. I will never forget 911 it was a sad day in history. In the back of my mind I can't imagine the pain that all the familys who lost loved one went through.

well.. a big social change i've seen in my lifetime is 9-11. at the time i was in elementary school, yet it doesn't seem like it was that long ago. Anyways.. this has changed many people in many ways. Like some people are more patriotic and some people are being discriminated against because of it. This has changed me in a way that in the future i want to go into the Army. (Altho i wish there was no war)

The moment that most impacted me in history was 9-11. I was in first grade in Mrs. Tompson's room. I remember they announced it over the big speakers at school, and we all had a moment of silence. I was really scared because I didn't completely understand what happened.

My dad owns a plane, and is a pilot himself. He was planning on flying on 9-11. He didn't know that he wasn't suppose to, and we were in the plane with him. The Air Force tracked him down, and pulled us out of the sky. At the time I didn't understand what was going on. I didn't even know that anything was happening. Now it's like a big joke in our family.

Though my family joked about what my dad did on 9-11, I still can't get over the fact of how many people lost family members that day. That was the saddest moment in History that impacted me the most that I can recollect. Though I had such trouble with 9-11 I still fly, and I am definately not afraid. I want to go into the Air Force to fly fighter jets when I am older.

One thing that has changed me is not much of an event, but more of an awakening. What has changed me is one night when my mom's friend was over she was talking about how cool it was that you could see your own house from google satellite pictures then right then i realized what has become of technology. that made me think about how far we have come from just twenty years ago. the most bizarre thing about it though is that if that is what us as civillians can see just imagine what the government can do like for instance we can see photos of our own homes the government can probably use a live feed and be monitoring us 24/7. This is what has changed me.

Barrack Obama was the first African-American president. That was one social change during my history. It was important for me because im puerto rican and for some one to become president that isnt caucasian is a big motavation for me because it pretty much says that you can do anything no matter the color of your skin or sex.

There are many things in history that impacted me. One was 911. I don't remember anything about it or being at school. The only things I remember is being at home, and my dad having the news on and seeing all the smoke and buildings burning down and all the people in the streets running. I felt helpless, seeing all those people, I wanted to help them. It felt like they were so close, but they were really so far away. I was sitting at home, safe, watching it all happen, and people were really out there, experiencing it all. At first it didnt seem real to me. I didnt really understand what was happening, but it opened my eyes to the world. I knew that everything isnt always all nice and happy. I figured out that the world was harsh and mean, and they dont really care if you go down, they were going to get what they wanted. It was so sad to watch. I feel horrible for those who lost their loved ones. I know now that in order to make things better, we have to all try, and all help to make it safe.We can be proud of our country, but we need to work together to seep it safe and make it our home.

A moment in history I remember is 9-11. I was 6 years old and didn’t understand what had happened. I went to church that night and many people were crying. I remember standing in a circle and praying for all the families that had lost loved ones. I knew that the buildings had been hit by planes and fell down, that people had died and firefighters were hard at work. This impacted me because it showed me that when something bad happens there is good that tries to help it. I knew I didn’t fully understand. I felt sad and sorry for the people around me crying. This is one of the biggest memories in history I can recall. I am not afraid to fly, but always hope we will land safely.

While my mind savors this question, I find a quiet disappointment as an answer. My six year old mind was too naive when 9/11 occured, so obviously that subject's not possible to broach...

I do not, in any shape or form, mean to come across as a "Bleeding Heart Liberalist." So keep that in mind as I go deeper into detail about what has impacted my life to the third degree.

On October 28, 2008, I became a strict Vegan. No dairy products, no egg products, no leather products, and no meat products. I became a vegan by watching a video on goveg.com, a video that showed the viewer the actual reality of most farm-raised animals destined for slaughter. It broke my heart to see such cruelty take place upon God's creation, such violence and torture to be overlooked, because these creatures were only animals; they were only meat.

Today, September 28, 2009, I am still a strict vegetarian/vegan. I chose becoming a vegetarian as something that impacted me because of the fact that vegetarians do not abstain from meat for themselves; they do it for the animals. To this day, people approach me and question why I don't enjoy meat. They have the wrong idea! I love meat, with duck or yak being my favorite. I just abstain from it, because I love animals more than the lust I have for their flesh.

Given, animals were placed here for human consumption- I am well aware of that. I am not ranting and raving about how everyone who eats meat is a monster, or how every animal on every farm is tortured (which is not the case, in some places.) I am showing that by becoming a vegetarian, my life has changed. I now incorporate empathy to almost every situation in my life, and I have developed compassion for all living creatures, not only animals, but also with humans.

A moment in history that impacted me was when my cousin was murdered. I was four years old, but I definitely still remember. I was on the way to my grandma's, this was usually a great thing. Then I noticed my mother was crying. I asked why she was crying and she told me. It was all over the newspapers, me being on the front page of one, and even on the news. This was a big deal. I didn't cry because I hadn't known her for as long as my other family members and I was four, but it still changed me and my family.

I look out for myself and pay attention to my surroundings. I will also never work at a gas station, that being where it happened. It was definitely sad and changed my family. My family really watches out for each other and makes sure we are safe. It brought us closer than before. I will never forget the tragedy or my cousin.

i make sure i tell my family everyday that i love them ,even if im upset with them, b/c you never know whats going to happen. so i just love them as much as i can before its too late.

I cannot remember the date exactly but it was the BIG BLACKOUT that caused some states to have no power for about three or four days. I was with my family and it showed me how to live in a world without technology and to live in a world with using only what you have in front of you. This affected me because it showed me to actual be more aware of my surroundings and resources that you maybe never even knew you had.

To Marissa pappas: Keep note, not put downs only philosophical ideas here.
I wanted to ask on this subject. You said that you choose not to eat meat because of the animal cruelty towards them for food. But how do we know that maybe plants have feelings too? Maybe theres more to what we see and that these plants do have some sort of "brains." I mean these plants no when they are thirsty so they drink, they make their own food through a different kind of way but maybe their more than "just" a plant. You have a deep heart for loving animals so much but we were made to eat well balanced meals and there are health risks to extracting poultry from your diet. But this is just questions and wonders so i asked them. Keep up your beliefs though. (like i said just thinking on a different level, no discriminating.)

When I was in second grade, I heard about a plane crash into the twin towers. On September 11th, 2001, our country had a great social change.
I remember watching a video on the television one day of the crash, so I asked my mom about it. She old me what happened, and that two other attacks were planned but I think failed. After September 11, the country found terrorism to be an important issue. I wittnessed an increase in airport security, now you cannot even have shampoo in a carry-on bag without a label or proper size, and you are completly scanned. Airline security was never before so strict. Another change I heard about in my lifetime, was on one of the other planes on 9-11, a man beat up another man who was trying to crash the plane, and was thought of as a hero who did nothing wrong himself. So, phsyical prevention of terrorism was encouraged.
I was scared of having my dad fly on planes thinking his would crash for a long time, and I always get nervous when I fly today. I was with my mom when I found out, and I still do not really like the idea thta someone could porposely crash a plane and hurt people. This was the first real issue that happened close to home involving terrorism during my lifetime, and I still frightens me today.

I have had many moments in my history that have changed me in the past few years. The greatest of moments weren't those that I saw in the public, nor those that I saw on the media but those that I have experienced throughout my life time.
It happened 6 years ago, and I didn't know how to swim... I was out and in the ocean (my family and I were on vacation) and seeing how big the waves were getting, I was probably neck deep or lower at the time when I saw this huge wave come. I try jumping over it but it ended up taking me away somehow. Then all I felt was me spinning around and around in circles, my eyes were open, I could see the ocean somehow in its clear blue state, turning sort of whitish. As much as I thought of being scared I really wasn't at the same time. You couldn't hear yourself being circled around or anything. It was like going to space. I couldn't breathe, but I didn't want to open my mouth. What seemed to have been hours have only been a couple of good seconds. When I ran up to the hot dry sand I sat down and looked at the ocean. As I looked around I only saw the people of the beach, talking, laughing, and having a good time. No one noticed anything of what had happened to me... My eyes didn't burn, my skin wasn't damaged by the rocks at the shallow water, all I had was a pain in my nose from the salt water.
I was with no one because no one saw me at the beach.
I was impacted with this memory greatly by the spinning of wave, it gave me such a scare, it gave me the determination to know how to swim and get out of a situation such as that. It changed me by seeing that death can happen any time if you're stupid enough. You shouldn't be alone and out in the open (I'm talking about anywhere). You'll never know when a wave will come up and take your life.

A time in history that has impacted me is when my mom and dad got divorced and we left Brook Park, where i have lived for 12 years, and moved to Brunswick.
I left a lot of my friends and came here in the 7th grade and i became more active in sports like football, and track. It also helped me decide that i really like doing those physical activities and that i would like to pursue a career in personal training or other career like it.

I imagine how sad it must have been for all the families that had lost a family member. I can't even imagine my dad or any of my family dying in 9/11. I think a big important moment in my life that impacted me was when my brother scott left for college. I am the youngest in my family. My sister Allison is 11 years older, my brother jeff is 9 years older and my brother scott is 7 years older. So when i was younger i had my sister leave which was hard because i was really attached to her. Then Jeff left and it was still kind of hard. Then when i was in 6th grade Scott left. It was weird. I didnt have anyone there to help me with things. Sure
my mom and dad could help, but not the way my siblings did. They couldnt tell me what this teacher was like or how to do this and that. My brother used to babysit me at night to, but when he was gone i was all alone. I just felt really alone at that time and it really impacted my life.

one of the social changes i went through was 9 11. a lot of other people went through this change also. i remember everyone going into the gym in 1st grade, there were still tables left from lunch, we sat at them, all the teachers were there. there was one tv in the front of the gym that we were watching. we were watching the news about how two planes crashed into the twin towers. i did not understand at that time what exactly this ment. over the course of time i started to understand and see the pain that was inflicted. this changed the security at the air ports, obviousally, and so much more. in fith grade there was this girl in my class and her father died in the world trade center. i saw her pain and was very sorry for her and all the people who had friends or family members that died in the 9-11 attack. it impacted the way that i saw the world and what kind of people were in this world. many americans were socially changed, we had to brace for the worst and pull through it. we have some sick people in this world and innocent people had to pay for this and it should have not happened. this is just one of the social changes in my life. i will never foget this day.

A pretty recent moment in history that affected the way I view the world happened during this past election year. Proposition 8 was a ballot proposition in California dealing with same-sex marriages, and whether or not marriages between two people of the same gender should be recognized. I believe that people should have equal rights, no matter what sexual orientation they are, or anything else for that matter. It disappointed me that California couldn't come together and realize that Proposition 8 was a simple civil rights issue. People had verrrrry strong feelings about the topic and even though people came together in support of the issue, the people that were outraged by it and protested it outnumbered them. I couldn't believe that people would be so hateful towards a group just because of who they love. Even if Prop8 would have been on a different topic it wouldn't have mattered, I think that people should stop being ignorant and realize they are denying a group simple civil rights they should be receiving.

Alot of people are probably saying that 9/11 impacted them but I dont see how it would because we were all only in 1st grade when it happened so how would you really know what the impact was? I know I didnt. So a moment in history that impacted me the most was probably not really the most important thing to the world and isnt very life changing, but it was really important to me. The day I figured out I had to quit cheer and take time off because of my wrist.I had to leave all my bestfriends that were there for me. Especially Bri, I hardley ever see her anymore and that really hurts me.

One moment in history that has impacted me is the Iraqi war. My uncle Cevan had been sent off to Iraq to fight a number of times now. It was about six years ago, maybe more, when he had first left. His wife, Norma, and baby daughter, Emma came to live with my family and I for atleast six months. This made a difference in my home for awhile. Norma and Emma slept in my room, so I slept in the living room on a mattress for a pretty long time. I got really close to Emma and Norma and they eventually left and went back to their home in Washington state. Just recently have I seen Emma and my Uncle Cevan when they visited Ohio for a few weeks. It had been atleast six years since I had seen Emma, and about three or four years since I've seen my uncle.

After all, that is the main reason that i was even able to go in the first place. what changed in me is that i realized that this world is a big place and that there are different cultures even in this united states. i realized that working hard and studying and making the right decisions really pays off and i really dont do stupid things bc i no how much it can ruin your potential so that you are not able to do things like represent your state and go to such interesting places like Hawaii ♪afitzroy

I never thought this could ever happen to the United States. I always heard about things happening to other countries and I thought we were lucky nothing bad ever happened to us.

I changed because I saw at that moment we don’t live in a perfect world. Bad things happen to us when we least expect it. If we help each other out though, like we did that sad day, then we can get through anything.

A moment that impacted my life was 9-11. 9-11 was when terrorists ran planes into the world trade center. When this action took place I was in first grade. It's hard to believe it was that long ago, when it feels like it was recent. Some of the things I noticed during this situation while I was in first grade was that some students went home, I didn't know why though. I stayed at school and all I knew was that something important must have happened.
Now, years later, 9-11 is still a big deal and it made a big change on not only how I look at the U.S.A. but how it effected millions of people as well. I still remember where I was and how things took place when it happened.

A momment in history that really left an impact upon me was when I decided that I wanted to go to Japan in fifth grade. I was with one of my closest friends, Sam M. & Ashlee B. They helped me realized my passion. Sam M. was the one who got me into reading manga, or japanese comic books, & wanting to learn about anything japanese. Aslee was the one who got me into improving my art skills in being a mangaka, or a manga artist. But anyways, one day I just woke up & decided that from then on, I'd do whatever it takes to get to that point of having the change to travel to Japan & maybe even spend a couple of years there going to an art school. It gave me a goal in life & something to work for. It impacted me greatly & ever since then everything I've ever done was to help me get closer to reaching that goal. (:

I was in school at the time, with my classmates and my 1st grade teacher, Miss Johnson, when the principal made an announcement saying that "bad people" had drove a plane into a building and a lot of people had died. She didn't really explain it that much because she didn't want to worry/scare any of the students. I also remember how a bunch of kids got picked up, a lot of them were crying, and the kids that didn't go home (including me) watched movies for the rest of the day with our teachers. I also remember how when I got home from school that day, my mom told me what happened and me and my parents watched the news for the rest of that day. This impacted me, my family, and all of America because it was a terrible event in history that affected us all, and many innocent lives had been lost. I was only in 1st grade, so nothing really changed in me at the moment because I was too little to fully understand all that was going on, but I do remember that I felt sad that many people had died and how it was a sad, sad day that will always be grieved and remembered.

A historical moment in history that impacted me was when President Barack Obama was elected in Novemember 2008. It impacted me because it showed me that our country isn't as predjudice as everyone says and thinks we are. I mean our country and other countries think we are so predjudice and racist but obviously we aren't all that predjudice since we elected an african american as president! That's huge. It was our first black president in history and I was alive to watch it and see it. So now I can tell my kids that I was around when our country went down in history by elected Barack Obama.

A moment that has impacted me was when the Iraqi war started. Since then the economy has been getting worse. It has impacted me because my family has had less money because gas prices have risen along with many other things. Also my friend's stepdad had to go to Iraq and fight. He came home fine but my friend still didn't want to see him have to leave. The Iraqi war hasn't positively impacted Americans much at all.

A moment in history, not national history but personal. In 2001, I was with my cousin, cassie, and my brother Michael, when we got a call saying that my moms best friends son, Jason, had died in a car accident. Jason had been like a second big brother to me. I was only six when it happened, but this made me change, as young as I was, to live my life treasuring each moment, and not letting anger get in the way, because life is short and you never know when one could end. To this day I wish things had been different that maybe I could have gotten to know him better, but you cant dwell on the things that happened in the past that were negative but focus on the positive and thats how I get through having lost a "big brother"

The moment that changed me was when my family's dog died. Not because it was sad, because it wasn't sad at all, which was the problem. I guess I just never really cared. Now I care a whole awful lot, all because of that day, I realized then that other things happen, kinda in that way, and that I had to see the big picture, If you understand.

A moment that impacted me was 911. I remember i was in first grade and then my mom came and picked me up from school. Whenever I got home she let draw pictures which didnt really happen that often so I knew something was wrong so then she explained to me what had happened. I didnt really understand then because i was so young. It impacted me because now its alot harder for me trust people because you never know what theyre capable of doing.

A moment in history that has impacted me was when there was a bomb threat in my school. Even then I knew that those bomb "threats" were, in the past, just threats. It still made me think because no one told us there was going to be a bomb threat and it actually was a threat. nothing happened, but while I was in the boys locker room where they gathered us I thought about all I had done and not done. All the things I was thankful for. I was alot happier and thakful for going home and waking up the next day and going to school.

A moment in history that impacted me was 9/11 because at the time i was in the truck coming home from take your child to work day (haha) and my dad works some what far away from home. So when we were on are way we heard this rumbling noise overhead and my dad then stuck his head out of the window, i looked through the windsheild of the truck and saw three planes jetting off to New York City. When we got home we realised what had happened and i was thinking about all those innocent people being killed. It was a moment in history that i will never forget.

Everyone is saying that 9-11 had an impact on there life, but that doesnt make any sense because we were in the first grade so how could anyone have really known the issue except by the looks on there teachers faces, but whatever its there choice, a moment in history that has really impacted me wasnt anything important to anyone and isnt big, it was just my parents divorcing when i was 4, thats a big issue to me because its caused a lot of problems, and its been very tough.

A moment in history that impacted me was September 11, 2001. I was in first grade at the time, and we were all coloring in our books. When there was an announcement for a lockdown, all the teachers turned their TVs on. I remember seeing the planes crash. I knew what happened, even when no one else did. I think i cried. Even at 7 I realized just how many people wouldn't get to see their families again.

Siblings are a huge part of my life. With two little sisters running around and a younger brother bugging me to no end, I can't take it at times. However, it was not always that way. The moment that changed my life was when my parents told me that I was going to have two little sisters. I remember that I was in my living room eating snack and my parents were on the other side of the living room sitting on the house. They called my brother and me over and told us that we were going to be big brothers. It impacted me because it took a lot of attention away from me and brought it upon my sisters. I also would have a lot more responsibility as the years went on. What changed in me is that I began to realize that I was not the most important one and that I could not always be in the spotlight.

A moment in history that has impacted me was 9-11. I don't remember where I was or who I was with or what I was doing. This has impacted me by thinking everyday, when the clock strikes 9:11, I think about all the families that were in pain because of the crash. There is not a moment at that time that I don't think about all the people who died that day.

We elected the first black president this year. It impacted me by, putting belief in me heart that all people are equal. No matter there race or color. I believe its a mark in history where peaple are becoming more united and less racially discriminating. I think this will open the doors for more liberal thinking in other parts of society.

One thing that changed me in history and it might seem like and obvious and repetitive answer to this quetion but 9-11 changed the way i saw the world. I was at school in first grade probably paling around with some friends unaware of what was goin on. One thing i do remember was coming home and my mom crying and hugging me thanking the lord i was safe. I didn't understand what was going on. So i asked her why she was acting this way. She told me that terrorists had crashed planes into buildings killing many. That is when i realized just because we live in a place where no war is taking place were still in danger of attacks and extreme violence. This showed me a new door to the world which probably would've been best left close till older years. Unfortunately this event did happen and did have a big impact on my life at an early age.

What happens when disaster strikes the United States? People count the deaths and grieve over the passing of the strangers they meet on the street. Hurricane Katrina, the number of deaths spray painted on the door of every flooded home. The great tsunami in Asia, people clinging to trees in an effort to save their lives. The Darfur genocide...All of these things have happened in my lifetime. When great misfortunes happens in the United States I find that my mind shows no compassion. But when I see other worlds suffering without out help or because of us, then I look at things differently. Maybe it is because we are greedy and count our losses more than our wins. I have learned that they only tell you only know who dies, they never tell you know who lived

My parents were living in Vietnam when tension there grew into a huge war. If the Vietnam war had not occurred I wouldn't be here today. My parents met each other in the U.S. after leaving Vietnam. They met each other in Texas and soon after, I was born. Without the Vietnam War, the chances that my parents would leave the country and meet eachother in the States would have been very unlikely.

It is pretty obvious that the event that had a great impact on me took place on September 11th. I was in first grade and during story time I was told something bad happened. My teacher could not tell us what happened, but when I got home my parents explained.

At such a young age somehow I was able to understand the impact of 9/11, not from watching the news and seeing the buildings fall down, but from how upset my mom was. My dad was home from work before I was even home from school, which never happened. Back then I was lucky if I got to see him before bed.

Now that I'm older 9/11's impact is becoming bigger and bigger. I'll never be able to fully understand it, but it's the one memory that is as clear as the memories I made today.

one thing that really effected me in history was 9-11 i was in 1st grade when the planes flew into the world trade centers and i remeber that day because it was the only day that my dad came to the bus stop in the after noon to pick me up. also on that day my mom didn't want me leaving the house going to a friends house and my brothers where watching to tv the whole night and not in there rooms like usual. This effected me because i travel alot with my family and because of 9-11 airport security got a lot harder to get through and for a while i was really scared to go on a plane.

A moment in history that impacted me were the terrorist crashing planes into the twin towers on Sept 11th, 2009. I was at school and they all called us into an assembly. I kew that something bad has happened and it got rid of my feeling that all people were nice. I wont ever forget that day. And I wont ever forget all of the brave men and women that died on september 11th, 2009

To make a note on mrs. Perrin's blog, i did a report on Christa McCaullif-the first teacher to attempt going into space. of course she was killed in the challenger when it exploded. i was in fourth grade when i did this project. even though i don't remember why i picked her as my topic but i'm glad i did. that tought me a lot about life. how it doesn't matter who you are, good or bad, horrible things can happen to anyone.

A change in history that has impacted my life was 9-11. I don't remember it as much beacuase I was only in first grade. But as I got older I started to realize how tragic and disturbing it was. It makes me realize how lucky I am and how good my life is because I didn't have any loved one's on the planes. I think 9-11 definatley impacted the way americans looked at our country and stopped to think about how they should really appreciate how good their lives are because you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.

One moment that impacted me was the tragic moment of 9/11. I was at school when it first happened, and I remember coming home to my parents just staring blankly into the television. This event caused me to love my country even more and to always show my patriotism.
