The Blind Viewer

We watch an amazing amount of television in this country.  Some of it is good and some of it is not so good. Reality television takes the drama that most people run from in their own lives and broadcasts it for a full audience.  Whatever the television show, there is a meaning to be taken.  The Wizard of Oz was originally commentary on the Industrial Revolution. We have turned it into an iconic film filled with romance of days past and what could have been.  The movies, Red Dawn, Hunt for the Red October, and No Way Out are all movies that came out in the 80"s.  This in turn was to provide commentary on the Cold War.
My point is that what we watch each day impacts our ideas and our views.  Look at what you are watching now.    The movie remake, Red Dawn changed its antagonist to North Korean invaders.  What commentary are they making now?  What are you watching and what do the writers, directors, and actors want you to take from it?

  • Your assignment: Look at what you watch this week.  Pull one example.
  1. Briefly provide some background information
  2. Explain what message is being conveyed to those viewing
  3. How is that message being conveyed--characterization, visual imagery, archetypes, etc?

1. What I usually watch during the week is the daily news.

3.) The message is displayed through characterization of a "nerd".

I watch tv before going to bed at night and usually everynight i watch Full House. It is an older show from the 80s but is still very entertaining. The show portrays an almost perfect family. There are problems but the problems are never left unresolved. The house they live in is perfect and clean. The girls dress conservative and when there is something wrong, they talk it out with the family. I feel as if the show is very unlike how most families are but yet people watch it because it is an ideal family.

3. The message is displayed through the actions and choices they make through out the show.

1. One show that I watch religiously is The Bachelor. It is a competition between a group of women competing for the love of one eligible bachelor. Each week a girl is let go, until the bachelor finds his "love" usually resulting in an engagement.

2. The message that is portrayed through this show is that everyone can find love, and that even though they might not find it on the show, it is out there.

3. This message is displayed through the things said by the participants and the context of the show as a whole.

1. What I usually try to watch every week is the Daily show with john stewart and the Colbert report with stephen colbert.

2. The message they convey is that there is two sides to every coin, and that both sides have thick accusations that are actually false.

3. Rather than endlessly badmouth both sides, they make fun of them, in addition to making an example of how easy it is to abuse political systems like "superpacs", current medical technology scandals, and key events happening around the world. They manage to keep it interesting, funny, and creative.

1. I watch a show all the time called that 70's show

2. The message conveyed is that when there are problems with the family you can talk it out and also there are many teenagers in the show doing teenager mistakes and learning from them.

3. The message is displayed through teens and a family.

I do not watch mush television, but when i do it is pretty random. One thing I do enjoy watching is The Real Housewives of Beverley Hills. It is about seven or so women who are hardly famous for one reason or another, many of them are washed up or are just plain rich. A few though are successful entrepreneurs though. The show follows their lives, drama, fights, and activities they do. The message being conveyed to those watching is that wealth will make you happy and famous. This is the message they are trying to portray but I do not view it this way. I would not trade my life for the superficial ones these ladies live. People do look at these women though and want their lives because they have nice things and do extravagant things which is making normal society want more, be greedy, and possibly self conscious of themselves. The message is conveyed through visual imagery and materialistic objects. People see flashy jewelry and clothing and cars and automatically want to be like these women because of their wealth when really they are distraught in their own lives.

1. One show that i watch every week is "Teen Mom". It is a reality show about four girls that are juggling being a mom, going to school, and just being a teenager.
2. The message that is conveyed to the viewers is to not have kids at such a young age. The show shows the struggles each of the girls face being a teen mom.
3. The message is shown through their daily life struggles, and just everything that they have to deal with everyday.

1. The show I watched this week was “Psych”, about a fake psychic detective for the Santa Barbara police department. Though he is not a real psychic, the protagonist uses his real detective skills his dad taught him to solve cases.
2. The show comments on how humor is important even during serious and stressful situations and how anyone can be a hero even without magic powers.
3. The show demonstrates this through the protagonist and his best friends’ constant jokes and immaturity at crime scenes or during investigations. Also, everyone seems to have a turn being brave and heroic during the show not just the protagonist, and none of them really have special powers.

1) This week my Dad wanted to watch the first "Atlas Shrugged" movie, I was far enough along in the book to not object. It is about a collapsing economy that is filled with politicians who argue for socialistic ideals that prove detrimental to productive capitalists.
2) The message is against all of the misgivings surrounding rich industrialists. Society views them as greedy and inhumane. The movie (basing its message off of the book) portrays the deterioration of infrastructure when public opinion focuses more on benevolence at the expense of quality. It hopes to help its viewers sympathize with how productive greed is necessary in establishing many of the things we rely on.
3) The point takes its battleground in characterization. The main characters are either hard-working, "greedy" capitalists or corrupt, manipulating politicians (even if they are CEO's). If the movie did not drawn the line so dark between the two, it would be without argument. The capitalists would be just like everyone else and their economic position would seem unfair. The politicians would merely be acting in the interests of the common good.

Today, I'm going to watch a movie called "21 and Over". It's about an asian college student who gets talked into partying before a big interview with his grad school by his two white friends. The message comically conveys inappropriate views and bad morals by making fun of asian stereotypes, telling kids that it's O.K. to party before something important, and listening to your friends will make your life more fun (even though sometimes it can lead to complete chaos). It's a terrible movie to go see. But the reason why people see this stuff is because it (1) makes you laugh, (2) is considered the social norm, and (3) has humor/situations that can be compared to other people's lives.

1. The show that I watch every week and rarely miss is Dance Moms. It is a show about 7 girls who are on Abby Lee Miller's competition team. They learn solos, groups, numbers, trios, etc. every week and compete.

2. The message that this show conveys ,besides how petty people can be (the moms, the idea of hard work and how hard work pays off. The girls work extremely hard and win first place quite often.

3. The t.v. show presents this idea by showing the girls rehearsing and learning new choreography. We also get to see them perform and the awards they receive.

The show that I love watching just about everyday is "Moderan Family". It's such a good family show. It is about 3 family's that are all one family though. The uncles the grand parents and all. They all have there own problems within each other and fighting and they have out side confictls but they are still all family. The message it give out is that even through the hard and struggles for life they all fight yet they love each other and work things out because you only live once and this is your family. How this is shown is by they take simple every day problems and change it up. They turn the problems and the create more and more between each others but yet they did work it out. They can relate this just like in our every day life's.

High Society is a musical about differing opinions of relationships, specifically how the woman should be thought of and treated. In the end the character Sam must choose between three men essentially based on their view of what a wife is.

The message is that husband and wife must understand they are equals and imperfect.

This message is conveyed through the general unhappiness when the women expects to be treated like a godess and the man goes along with this. The opposite is represented in the second man who is considered by both a little better. The third man is the one she is happiest with because he expects them to act as equals.

Surprisingly, I haven't watched a lot of TV this past week. One show I make sure I always watch when I have the time is Doctor Who. It's about a crazy man with a box that travels through time and relative dimensions in space.
The episode I was able to watch was called "Asylum of the Daleks." The message portrayed throughout the episode is that things are not as they appear to be.
The message is conveyed through visual imagery, as while traveling underground in an alien planet, the doctor's companions start being affected by some hallucinogenic toxin. As well, another character in the episode that tries to help the doctor is usually seen in a self made sanctuary \, but when the doctor finds her, he sees that she has been mutated into a dalek herself, and unknowingly repressed that information.

Charllie doesnt really have any friends and has emotional problems from when he was little. He eventually meets some friends throughout the year. The message being showed is to participate in life. Charlie is a wallflower so he sees everything that goes on around him. So he tells himself the whole year to try participating instead of sitting back and watching. This is showed by all the things Charlie tried doing. He forced himself to go to football games and dances. He met his first two friends at a football game and they got him to do things with them.

1. A show I watched this week was Justified. Basically the main theme for this season is running from your past. Two of the most pivotal characters this season are a fugitive who had been hiding in plain sight for 20 years only to be suddenly outed, and an ex-hooker who was supposed to be killed after seeing something she wasn't supposed to.
2. The overall message is that your past is inescapable. The main protagonist is a cop, but still has to look back on his shady history of growing up in the town. Even when characters think they've put it all behind them, something makes them have to deal with their past again.
3. The message is being conveyed through pretty obvious dialouge and the occasional foreshadowing that ex-prostitute will basically have to go down the same road that the fugitive took. At one point, a crime boss and his wife who wanted the ex-prostitute dead in the first place find both characters in one place. The man who is holding them captive will only sell one of them to the crime boss. If he picks the fugitive, the bounty he will get can seal his future as a life of luxury. If he picks the ex-hooker, then his past will never come back to haunt him. They literally have to choose between their past and future. Every character is pretty much an archetype of some sort.

I do not watch much TV. However, I did watch one movie and it was called Sabrina.
This movie is about an awkward girl named Sabrina. She is the daughter of the Chauffeur for a rich family called the Larabys. She is "in love" with the youngest son, David. He is a flighty man who can not be interested by one thing for more than a week. To her horror she is taken away from her obsession and sent to Paris by her father. During this time David becomes engaged to another woman. His brother, Lynase uses their engagement to arrange a merger between his fiance's family corporation and his own business. Upon returning Sabrina is a completely different. David finds himself attracted to her and calling off the engagement. Lynase must intervene or risk losing his merger. His plan is to make Sabrina fall in love with him instead and whisk her back to Paris where he will dump her. However, he finds he can not do this to her. He tells David that he no longer wants the merger and will allow Sabrina and David to be together.
In the end David realizes it is time for himself to settle down and marry his fiance, and Lynase ends up with Sabrina in Paris.
The message of this story is that you never really know what you want. Lynase only wanted to deal with the business side of life and follow in his father's footsteps, but realizes he would rather be his own person. David thinks he can not settle down, but realizes that he did indeed want to marry his fiance. And lastly Sabrina thought that her life would be a "meaningless dark abis" without David, but realized that Lynase was indeed the right person for her.

It is a reality TV Show where an Ex-marine who is now involved in property management goes into properties where the tenants have been evicted or are breaking codes of their rental space. There is always some fight that ensues once the property management team comes in.
2) The main message that is conveyed is that drama rules peoples lives. There is never an episode where a huge fight does not occur.
3) The visual imagery supports this message. The fights are always recorded and make up the majority of the episode.

The movie the Proposal is about an Executive Editor In Chief, Sandra Bullock, who finds herself being deported because of failure to properly fill out immigration forms. She then forces her secretary, Ryan Reynolds who despises her, to marry her - he agrees only in order to keep his job. The message being conveyed is that political power often corrupts the individual and that people high up in the business world often forget about life and family and are flooded only with logic and lack of emotion. Ryan even says to Sandra that she is allergic to human emotion during their flight to Alaska. Reflecting the time period, we find the main character to be a businesswoman: long brown hair, thin, respectful, intelligent, controlling, living alone, and surviving off of coffee. She never lets anyone forget that she is in charge but throughout the course of the movie Ryan takes her away from her working environment and breaks her down until she feels true love and remembers what family is all about. One archetype I found is the large body of water which not only is a cleanser, where many problems are aired, but also as a barrier which separates the business life of New York City, and the home life of Sitka Alaska. From accidental intimate settings, to merely too much time spent together, Sandy and Ryan learn enough about each other to breakdown the power struggle of the business world and earn respect for each other’s work, where they eventually find love.

1) This week, I was watching Game of Thrones, a TV series that deals with betrayal, war, and power-hungry people.
2) The message being portrayed in this series is that sometimes, in order to do the right thing, you have to let the enemy win first.
3) This message is being portrayed through characterization and stereotyping, as in the world of this show, all those with blonde hair is considered rich, and the Lannister family are all considered bad, as one killed a previous king and attempted to take the throne, as well as had incest with his twin, resulting in a boy who was considered the king's son, and ends up being king himself.

1.) A show that I enjoy watching is "How I Met Your Mother".

2.) This show is one man's way of telling his children the story of how he met their mother (fitting, I know). This show shows how one person's life is affected so greatly by every person that walks into it and that friendship is irreplaceable. This show is also a message saying that everything happens for a reason.

3.) This message is conveyed through the events that lead up to this main character meeting his wife and realizing his true purpose in life.

Unknown said...

1. I watched Parks and Recreation this week.
2. In the most recent episode one of the messages on display was looking past the differences between you and another person, because most things aren't worth arguing over.
3. The messages is being conveyed through the two main characters, Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson. Leslie is very pro-government and Ron is anti-government. If they faced off in a presidential election, people would think they hated each other. Yet they've become friends despite their fundamental differences. This is a recurring theme throughout the entire run of the show.

Being a dancer, I watch Dance Moms pretty regularly with my friends that I dance with. The show features a dance studio owned by Abby Lee Miller, a renowned choreographer. Abby is somewhat of a tyrant when it comes to the commitment she expects from the girls in the top group. Abby often butts heads with the mothers of these girls, mainly because each of the mothers demand that their child be the best and be at the top of the pyramid. The pyramid is what Abby does to control the girls. Each girl works their hardest to be at the top. After each competition, Abby reveals a new pyramid with the girls and their mothers gathered around. Abby justifies the placement of each girl by her actions as well as the actions of her mother. This allows Abby to keep her control over the mothers. She knows that the mothers will keep their daughters in dance because they love it. So she abuses this through the use of the pyramid. Abby often mentions that they way she runs her studio will prepare the girls for the real dance world. However, as a dancer, I have been to several competitions as well as class taught by professional dancers. This is not how the real dance world is. Yes, it is extremely competitive, but it is not as cut throat as this show makes it seem. This shows gives non-dancers the message that the dance world is extremely intense and unfair. If I were a parent who didn't know anything about the actual dance world, I would never sign my daughter up for dance. This message is portrayed through the mean and treacherous actions of Abby Lee Miller who claims to know everything about the life of a professional dancer.

The only thing I really watch at all is Big Bang Theory. I believe the message that is being portrayed is that we learn new things every day. Take, for example, Sheldon Cooper, one of the main characters in the show. He knows everything about theoretical physics, but when a neighbor moves in to the apartment across the hall, he is completely dumbfounded and unaware of what to do to greet them and make their stay more enjoyable. The meaning is told to the audience by Cooper's inability to socialize with anyone, save for his roommate, and the awkward reactions he shows when he is forced to talk to people.

One of the only TV shows I watch is the Walking Dead, and as a consequence it is one of the only shows I refer to while blogging. For this, I apologize. The show is about humans living in a zombie apocalypse, but lately, the zombies (or 'walkers') have been the least of the group's problems. What we see happening is that the humans, ironically, are the real problem. The message the show sends is that as humans, our inherently quarrelsome nature will be what dominates every situation now and in the future. Despite the apocalypse breaking out, the group is still going to war with another group of people. It is logical to assume that everyone would want to work together to stay alive, but this is not the case. Instead, people prefer killing people. The way that the show sends this message is through not only characterization, but also through the mood. It characterizes the leaders as unyielding and unwilling to compromise, and this is used to create a show-no-mercy attitude in the leaders of the two groups. The characterization of the leaders shows the true nature of humans as it was thousands of years ago, and as it is today and will be in the future. In addition to this, the show creates a heavily suspenseful mood, which allows the audience to feel the imminent doom that the human race is about to inflict upon itself.

One show that I watched was Dance Moms. This is a reality show in which it goes through the season of the Abby Lee Dance Academy, featuring the seven girl dancers and their mothers as they all try to excel to the top of the podium along with battling with one of the toughest instructors. The message that is being conveyed in my mind is that perfection is the only thing that matters in life. Not that perfection is a bad thing because who does not want to be perfect. But in Abby Lee’s eyes if you are not first then you are last. The message of perfection is portrayed by the use of constant work through rehearsals day after day, along with the many of trophies the studio and girls get as they perform at showcases around the region.

1. One show I watched this week was South Park, which is a cartoon series that is both crude and offensive to just about every audience.
2. The show is intended for a mature audience due to the large amounts of sexual innuendos, political commentary, and racism.
3. Messages such as racism are done through obvious characterization, such as naming a little black boy "Token". One character by the name of Cartman continuously harasses his friend for being a Jew. There is also an entire episode where Cartman fakes having Tourettes just to get away with swearing compulsively. Underneath the layers of crude humor and offensive language there is often commentary on a societal problem, and the boys often learn lessons at the end of their escapades.

2.) The message conveyed here was very, VERY clear; jail is bad, and if those kids kept on the path they were following, they'd end up there.
3.) The show relied heavily on visual imagery and sound to make its point. The insides of the jails were menacing (as were the people, and the sounds were just as menacing (from threats to banging noises, etc).

1. I watched the show Heroes, that involved people around the world discovering they control super-human abilities and they have to decide between using them to save the human race or creating a new world filled entirely with people like them.

2. The message being portrayed is that we all go through struggles based on what we deal with in life, and the ultimate decision is how to use these ideas to build a lifestyle.

3. The show uses a solar eclipse as its' main point of symbolism to show the mystery of actions that can sometimes be out of our control.

1) The show that I've been watching is World of Jenks. It's about a guy who follows three other people around to experience how they live their life for a year. He's following a guy with autism, a girl with cancer, and a guy who lives in a bad part of Oakland.
2) The message being conveyed to those who are watching is to open other people's eyes and realize what others have to deal with and maybe realize how lucky they may have it.
3) They message is being displayed by visual imagery because it's actually showing what they do on their day to day activities.

1) A show that I watch every week is The Walking Dead. In this show, Rick and his group must survive in a world infested with zombies. In the beginning of the show, many of the characters were very innocent and were compassionate about each other. After so many killings and deaths, they have all changed.

2) The message that is being conveyed to the audience is the idea of survival of the fittest. The characters have become numb. It is hard for them to distinguish between right and wrong in a world where survival is your only option. The Walking Dead also shows how important it is to look out for your loved ones. This is seen though Rick. He cares about his group and is willing to look out for them. I think the show is trying to say that it’s important to look out for yourself and the people you care about.

3) This message is displayed through characterization. Rick characterizes the idea of survival of the fittest. In one episode, Rick must kill his best friend in order to protect his group and survive.

2.) The message being conveyed is the value in peoples old stuff. When I watch the show the biggest thing I see is a walking advertisement. People find interest in what they do, and they want people to Buy/Sell them their things.
3.) these messages are being conveyed by simply doing their jobs and video taping it.

many of the thins that happen in the beginning tie into the end
3.) The message is shown through the characters and how they interact with each
other.

Over the weekend i watch the movie "O' Brother Where Art Thou?." This movie is based on the struggles of Odysseus from "The Odyssey." By Homer. Unlike the book the movie is based on the struggles in Mississippi during the depression. Showing characters such as Cyclops played by John Goodman. The message simply is based on the depression struggles such as racial -segreggation, the Ku Klux Klan, and high maintnance religions.

1. One of my favorite shows is 30 Rock
2. The show is very light hearted and intertwines current events and pop culture references into the storylines
3. The show uses satire a lot to poke fun of some of these these things. For example, they may make political jokes or make fun of reality tv

1. The show I picked was Friends, a show about six friends living in New York and spend almost everyday together.
2. The message of the show is when you have a problem, true friends will help you through it even if they have their own problems or that no matter what happens, your friends will be there to back you up, stick to your side or help you fight a battle.
3. This message is displayed by all the adventures the six characters deal with in each episode.

I have been watching the television show, Switched at Birth almost religiously these past two weeks. Though the show is supposed to revolve around two girls who were "switched at birth" it highly revolves around the deaf community. Through this show, my eyes have been opened up to the struggles of the deaf. I think the message the show is trying to convey is that deaf people are capable of a full life, but we have to be willing to see them as equals. This message has been conveyed through the most recent episodes, where the school for the deaf, Carlton, will be shut down because of lack of funding. The students of the school start a boycott to take back the school. I think this gives the message that deaf people are strong enough to have the rights they deserve.

1. The show i chose is called "king of the nerds". It is a show where many different people from across the country were chosen based on entry videos to gain entry to a house with several others and compete in competition to find the nerdiest nerd, win 100,000 dollars and be crowned king of the nerds.
2. The message that was conveyed is that being smart or liking things that most people don't doesn't make you an outcast and there are people just like you. Also be who you want to be and not what other people want and you will find real happiness.
3. The messages are being conveyed through the actions of the people on the show and by the characterization of being called a "nerd" and turning that word, which normall has a negative vibe to it, to a positive vibe.

1. The show I watch religiously every week is Once Upon A Time. I can't really explain it, because it has such a deep story, but mostly it is about fairly tale characters that have been transported to modern times because of a curse.

2. This is probably the best show for archetypes, it really incorporates almost every archetype we learned about, but the most prevelant one would be Good vs. Evil.

3. One of the biggest messages in this show would be that evil never wins and good will always prevail.

I watch a lot in spare time. But mostly, I like to watch NCIS. This is a show of naval criminal investigators that work incredibly well together, and treat one another as if they were family. Together, they solve hundreds of murder cases (in the usual case), with the exception of the rare, fictional terrorist attacks. I believe that the message conveyed in this show is that the bond between humans can grow to be the strongest of bonds, however, these bonds can be broken, and sometimes they lead to rash decisions – like committing murder. They convey this message through the distorted minds of the criminals that the team works so hard to put behind bears, and through the emotional, family-like bond of the team itself.

1. The show i like to watch is 16 and pregnant and teen moms which is the same people just after they have there kids and all.

2. The message these shows that I see is that there are alot of teenagers who get pregnant and struggle with their kids. But what most people think is that these shows are saying go get pregnant and you will be on tv, but that's not what I see. What I see out of these shows are be careful and take precautions and not get pregnant because it is so difficult and its not all about how cute the baby is.

3. The message that's being conveyed is that if you do get pregnant its not all about how cute the baby is, but that its a big responsibility and will change your life forever. They also show how the babies dad leave and struggles the mothers have to go through on a everyday basis.

I watched a few episodes of Lost this week, so I think I'll explain a bit of the most recent one....

Locke has finally blasted open the steel vault-like door in the ground in the middle of the forest. Inside, a computer whose purpose is left unclear to the group is introduced to the viewer and with it, the troubles of blind faith. A man has been typing in a code into the computer every 108 minutes for something like 5 years by the time they discover him. Then the duty is passed on to the group. The task becomes a test of blind faith, whether to believe the word of one man who doesn't know what will happen if the timer is allowed to reach 0 or to leave the computer as it is see if it has all just been an experiment left by the creators of the computer.

The message here is whether or not blind faith or even hope is valid. Within the episode a memory of one character is also evoked from the situation of the group. Being a doctor, the character believed that hope was something too farfetched in the face of reality. But in the end, the hope became reality. The message is one that challenges the reader to give hope a chance. Also the scene makes use of light-dark imagery and archetypes to show despair and then hope as the power goes out in the area but is then brought back just barely in time for the code to be typed in before the timer goes out.

1) This week I watched alot of CSI a show about solving crimes and bring people into jail for their crimes.
2) The message being provailed is the idea of a strong smart and flexable central government. It also has alot about cool new technologys and ways to beat people doing bad things.
3)They present this message with characterisation. There is a few big burly strong and quick policeman to chase down the criminals. There is also a smart geeky tech department. The last bigcharacterisation is the Big Boss character who is in charge of al the poilicmen.
